The Buddhist education is so important that it can be a foundation for both individual practice and the development of Buddhism. This paper examined the main tasks of the Seon(禪) program for the lay people. Seon practice should have a clear identification that it is based on the Buddhist world view and values. At the same time, the Seon education program needs to apply for the changes in the society, and meet with the needs of the lay people while understanding their characteristics. The Seon education program for the lay people is to be more effective when it can utilize the diverse problems people are confronting in the family and society; it is to be to play a role as a life-long education as everyday life and practice are not separate, but connected each other in the organic way. There are tasks of popularization, practicalization and modernization, so that Seon education program are more applicable and progressing in the today's global society. Regarding these tasks, the paper pointed out the goals of the education, a variety of the contents, and the practical use of modern methods of education. Some examples in the (2005), which are developed by the Bureau of Dissemination of Korean Jogye Order, are also given in the paper. The paper is an attempt for the further discussion in the subject.

불교 교육은 개인의 수행과 불교의 발전을 위한 초석이라고 할 정도로 중요하다. 본 논문은 재가자(在家者)를 대상으로 한 선(禪) 수행 프로그램에 있어서 몇 가지 중요한 과제들을 고찰해보고자 하였다. 선 수행이란 불교의 세계관과 가치관을 전제로 한다는 정체성을 명확히 하여야 한다고 본다. 동시에 선 수행 프로그램은 시대의 변화에 부응하면서 재가자들의 특성과 교육요구를 정확하게 파악할 필요가 있다. 재가자를 대상으로 하는 선 수행 교육은 가정과 사회에서 당면하는 다양한 문제들을 수행의 자료로 활용하여야 효과를 발휘할 수 있는 것이다. 생활과 수행이 괴리되지 않고 유기적으로 연결되어 열려 있는 평생교육의 장이 될 수 있어야 한다. 선 수행 프로그램이 현대 사회에 적용하고 발전하기 위해서는 대중화, 생활화, 현대화되어야 하는 과제가 부과되어 있다. 이러한 관점에서 프로그램의 지향점, 다양한 교육 내용의 구성, 현대적인 교육 방법의 활용 등을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 조계종 포교원에서 개발한 <간화선 기본 수행 프로그램>(2005)의 사례들도 제시하였다. 본 논문은 해당 주제에 대한 하나의 시도로서 장차 심도 깊은 토론과 논의들이 지속적으로 요구되는 사항들을 제시해보고자 한 것이다. 앞으로도 이에 대한 다양한 연구와 논의들이 더욱 활성화되어 보다 내실있고 효과적인 선 수행 프로그램들이 많이 개발되기를 희망한다.
