The elementary teaching of the Latin language in the Middle Ages bears a characteristic which is not found in the Latin grammars from the Antiquity. Whereas the Latin grammars in the Antiquity were composed for the students whose mother tongue was Latin, the medieval Latin grammars were imposed with the task of teaching the language as a foreign language. The teachers and grammarians of the early Middle Ages attempted and succeeded in creating new types of grammars for their needs. The new products, the Insular elementary Latin grammars and the medieval parsing grammars, were basically based on Donatus' two Artes, but the deficiency of morphological descriptions were compensated by the detailed morphological explanations and the numerous full paradigms of words belonging to the inflecting parts of the speech. Another feature found in the medieval parsing grammars is the combination of Donatus' and Priscian's grammatical doctrines. The way of using Priscian's descriptions in addition to those of Donatus developed as the time progresses from the mere juxtaposition into the well-organized structure. This article analyzes three grammatical treatises of the seventh to ninth centuries ― Ars of Julian of Toledo, Ars of Peter of Pisa and the Cunabula Grammatici Artis Donati ― with a focus on the development of the parsing method in the early medieval grammatical tradition.

중세 유럽의 라틴어 기초 교육은 외국어로서의 라틴어 교육이라는 특성을 가지고 발전하였다. 고대에 사용되었던 라틴어 문법서들이 라틴어를 모국어로 사용하는 학생들을 대상으로 하여 문학과 수사학적인 관점에서 문법을 서술하였던 반면, 중세 라틴어 문법서들은 일상적인 의사소통과 읽기와 쓰기 능력을 기초부터 가르치는 것을 목표로 하였다. 이러한 목표 하에 중세 초기 라틴어 교사와 문법학자들은 도나투스의 문법서를 기본으로 하여 새로운 방식의 문법서들을 만들기 시작했다. 그 결과물이 ‘브리튼 제도 기초 문법’과 ‘중세 예시어 분석 문법’이다. 중세 예시어 분석 문법은 예시어에 대한 질문과 대답을 통하여 문법 사항을 서술하는 문법 기법으로 9세기 이후부터 꾸준히 사용되었다. 중세 예시어 분석 문법은 어형에 대한 상세한 설명과 도나투스와 프리스키아누스의 문법을 통합하였다는 점에서 라틴어 문법학사와 기초 언어 교육의 역사에서 중요한 의의를 가진다. 본 논문은 7-9세기에 만들어진 세 개의 문법서-톨레도의 율리아누스, 피사의 페트루스, 『도나투스 문법 요람』-을 분석함으로써 중세 초기에 예시어 분석 기법이 어떠한 방식으로 발전하였는지를 살펴보았다.
