The purpose of this study was to identify instructors’ and students’ preference for classroom composition in basic skills courses. The participants were 31 instructors who had taught in both the single-major students’ classroom and multi-major students’ classroom in A university. In the study, 418 freshmen belonged to basic skills courses including math, science, English, and writing. As a result of the analysis, interaction in the single-major classroom was better than in the multi-major classroom; however, class atmosphere and instructors’ preference was better in the multi-major classroom than in the single-major classroom. Science instructors seemed to like the classes composed of the single major students; however, English instructors and writing instructors preferred the classes composed of several major students. Students had a strong preference for the classes composed of the several majors’ students because they expected to expand their human network and had a chance to interact with the different major students. The paper proposed further studies and offered some limitations.

대부분의 대학에서 교육과정을 수강하는데 필요한 기초지식이 되는 수학, 과학, 영어, 글쓰기 등을 신입생 때 필수 이수해야 하는 기초교과목으로 지정하고 있다. 본 연구는 기초교과목의 교육효과를 높이기 위한 방안 중 하나로 분반 방식에 주목하고, 전공별 분반(이하 전공반)과 전공통합 분반(이하 통합반)이 기초교과목 교육에 미치는 영향과 이에 대한 교육주체의 인식을 검토하였다. 수학, 과학, 영어, 글쓰기 등 기초교과목을 담당하는 교수자 31명을 대상으로 분반에 대한 인식을 조사한 결과, 교수자들은 통합반이 전공반에 비해 상호작용 면에서는 부정적이었지만, 수업분위기를 주도하거나 학업동기를 이끈데 긍정적이라고 지적하였다. 과학교과 교수자는 상대적으로 전공반을 선호하였으며, 글쓰기와 영어교과 교수자는 상대적으로 통합반을 선호하였다. 통합반으로 기초교과목을 수강하는 학습자 418명에게 분반에 대한 설문을 진행한 결과 다양한 전공의 학생들과의 교류 가능성이 높기 때문에 전공반보다 통합반을 선호한다는 응답이 많았다. 이 연구는 대학의 기초교과목의 교육환경으로서 분반방식에 대해서 생각해보도록 한다는 점에서 의미가 있다.
