Ethical problems relating to all the lifes and medicines arising from biomedical ethics are cannot be solved through traditional ethics theories which are just interested in man's performance and duty and verify rightness and wrongness.
Some experts studying biomedical ethics recognised the limit of the traditional ethics theories and attempted to solve the problems by approaching the methodologies based on the foundations.
But, those methodologies are lacked and limited to solve various ethics choice related problems because they are too abstract and formalized. Thus, today's biomedical ethics are highly interested in approaching methodologies based on virtue to solve those problems and the problem-solving is resulted from the limitation of solutions which is related to virtue problems through ethics based on foundation and from moral philosophers' increasing clinical experience to some extent. Reason for that is ways of foundation in various clinical environments should be selected and translated in the different relationships and people participating in these activities are the participants in the clinical activities and the results of ethical judgements are apparently dependent on nature of the participants in the clinical activities.
Approaching methodologies based on virtue tell how to live in not what to do by placing the standards of ethical judgement into performers not performances. But, renaissance of virtue in biomedical ethics does not claim to come back to virtue ethic just ignoring unconditionally ethic of foundation focusing on the performances and duties. Relationship between virtue and foundation are not opposing in selecting one out of two. As foundation as standards of performances and virtue of performers work together, more desirable solutions are presented.

생명의료윤리학에서 발생하는 모든 생명·의료와 관련된 도덕적 문제들은 사람의 행위나 의무에만 관심을 가지고 행위의 옳고 그름만을 따지는 전통적인 윤리 이론만을 가지고 해결될 수 없다. 일부 생명윤리학자들은 전통윤리이론의 한계를 인식하고 원칙에 근거한 접근방법을 통하여 문제를 해결하고자 하였으나 원칙에 근거한 접근 역시 너무나도 추상적이고 공식화되어 다양한 도덕 선택 문제를 해 결하기에는 부족하다는 한계점 을 가진다. 따라서 오늘날 생명 의료윤리학은 문제 해결에 있어서 덕에 근거한 접근방법에 관심을 기울이는데 이는 어느 정도는 원칙에 근거한 윤리를 통한 도덕문제 해결의 한계로부터 나오고 어느 정도는 임상적인 환경에 있어서의 윤리학자들의 증가하는 경험으로부터 나온다고 볼 수 있다. 왜냐하면 다양한 임상적 환경에서 원칙의 방법들은 서로 다른 관계 속에서 선택되고 해석되어야 하는데 이러한 활동을 하는 사람은 임상활동에 참여하는 행위자이며 도덕 판단의 결과는 임상활동에 참여하는 행위자의 성품에 의존하는 것은 명백하기 때문이다.
덕에 근거한 접근방법은 도덕 판단의 기준을 행위에 두지 않고 행위자에게 둠으로써 무엇을 해야 하는지가 아니라 어떻게 살아야 하는지를 말해준다. 그러나 생명의료윤리학에서의 덕의 부활이 행위와 의무에 초점을 두는 원칙의 윤리를 무조건적으로 배격하고 덕윤리로 돌아가야 한다고 주장하고자 하는 것이 아니다. 원칙과 덕은 둘 가운데서 하나가 선택되어 강조되어야만 하는 대립적인 것이 아니 다. 행위 기준으로서의 원칙과 행위 당사자의 덕이 상호 보완적으로 작용할 때 보다 바람직한 문제해결이 될 수 있다.
