The study on Hyangga, which was initiated from the Japanese scholars’ study of translating words, has made a remarkable achievement-both in quality and in quantity-for nearly a century. The Japanese study on Hyangga has had two different groups of research. One group has focused on the relations between Hyangga and the Japanese classical poetry. This group includes researches on relations with the Japanese classical poetry by comparing classical poetry of the two countries, which have belonged to a cultural area of the ancient Chinese character but developed their own culture. In addition, they have intended to investigate the generality and originality of the East Asian literature by comparing Hyangga with the Japanese classical poetry, and furthermore, by comparing with the Chinese. The other group has focused on Hyangga itself. This group covers researches on investigating the charateristics of Hyangga through micro-studies on words translation, expression, rhetoric, structure and rules of versification. The Japanese researchers’ works have shed new light on Hyangga from objective views of point of outsiders. Moreover, they have extended areas of study to show the methodological diversification, which explores the literary value of Hyangga from the East Asian poinf of view. More active study on investigating mutual literary connection in the East Asian Chinese character cultural area is needed but not sufficient at present. Therefore, mutual cooperative study and international exchange between the Korean and the Japanese scholars are urgently required. To this end, accessibility of the original text should be improved by translating more classical literature of the two countries. Furthermore, literay connection in the East Asian Chinese character cultural area should be activley investigated. We should establish the East Asian Perspective by overcoming regionality of study on Hyangga and expanding field of view.

본 논문에서는 1980년 이후 일본의 대표적인 향가 연구 결과를 정리하고 특징 을 살펴보았다. 연구의 목적은 일본 연구자들의 연구 성과들을 일람함으로써 향가 의 동아시아적 위상을 파악하고 비교문학 연구의 필요성과 방향성을 정립하는 데 있다. 일본의 향가 연구는 크게 두 가지 경향으로 나뉜다. 향가와 일본 고대가요와의 관련성을 비교 연구하는 입장과 향가의 독자적 특질을 일본 연구자의 시각에서 분 석하는 입장이다. 이러한 연구들은 궁극적으로 한자 문화권이라는 동아시아적 보 편적 배경 안에서 독자적인 문학 세계를 구축한 양국 문학의 고유성을 밝혀내는 의미가 있다. 비교 문학 연구가 지향해야 하는 과제는 동아시아 문화 공동체 안에서 공유된 의식과 개별화된 특질을 비교 분석하는 일이다. 동아시아 한자 문화권 내에서의 문화적 상관성과 문학적 관련성을 적극 규명하여야 한다. 이를 위해서 한국과 일 본 학자들의 상호 협력과 교류가 동반되어야 한다. 그리고 양국의 고전 문헌들이 번역되어 원전 접근성이 높아져야 한다. 향가 연구의 지역성을 극복하고 시야를 확대하여 동아시아적 시점을 확보함으로써 한국 문학의 세계화에 기여해야 한다
