Notwithstanding exploration on the square-shaped based analysis along with active investigation with the history of mankind, the perceptual aspects emerged with cognitive activity inherent in visual arts from the first half of the 20th century. Among the cognitive minded exponent, Rudolf Arnheim is a representative. He argued that cognitive faculty is perceptual activity itself, in this way, seeing is an essential nature of human perception. According to his argument, 'induced structure' would stimulate the retina of the human eyes. Therefore, this thesis is to analyze and approaches to visual perception of square shape of a close diachronic in our existence and on the basis of his theory of 'induced structure', through similar cases to assist in design of architectural form is intended. Method of the study explored and constitute elements in margin of square and line of square. This analysis based on the visual perception of the latent strength in a square by evaluating the characteristics of the type of square after review of similar cases. The formal cause would derive to employ on the outline of architectural form.

사각형의 형상을 바탕으로 하는 형상적인 측면에서의 탐구는 인류의 역사와 더불어 활발하게 전개되어 왔지만, 사고와 결합된 지각적인 측면은 20세기 전반기부터 시각예술에 내재된 인지활동에 대한 연구로 대두된다. 인지적인 특성을 밝히는 주창자 중에는 Rudolf Arnheim이 대표적이다. 그는 지각자체가 인지활동이라고 주장하는데, 본다는 것은 그것을 단번에 보아버리는 본질(intrinsic part)이고 그 바탕에는 눈의 망막을 자극하는 ‘유도된 구조(induced structure)’가 존재한다고 언급하고 있다. 그러므로 본 논문은 그의 ‘유도된 구조‘의 이론을 바탕으로 우리의 삶과 밀접한 관계의 통시적 도형인 사각형에 대해 시지각적인 측면으로 접근하여 분석하고, 그에 따른 유사한 사례를 통하여 건축물 형상계획에 도움을 주고자하는 것이 목적이다. 연구의 방법으로는 사각형을 구성하는 요소인 선과 여백에 대하여 고찰하고, 사각형에 내재하는 힘에 대한 시지각적 분석을 기반으로 사각형의 형상별 종류에 따른 특징을 분석하여 유사사례 검토 후 건축물 형상계획에 활용할 수 있는 결과를 도출하였다.
