‘옹고집’설화의 정착과 판소리적 수용에 대한 발제는 그 근원설화의 모색을 기점으로 한다. <옹고집타령>이 <장자못전설>류의 소박한 ‘인색’ 및 ‘학승’모티프, <구두쇠 이리이샤>, <일리사장로>, 쥐둔갑설화의 ‘변신’ 및 ‘진가 쟁투’모티프, 그리고 󰡔서유기󰡕의 <요괴양삼장둔갑설화(妖怪兩三藏遁甲說話)>와 <양행자쟁주설화(兩行者爭主說話)>의 ‘징치’ 및 ‘진가 판별’모티프가 정착, 확장되면서 판소리화 했을 것이라는 전제에서다. 다만 유유사건이나 <유연전>의 경우 ‘설화 → 판소리 → 판소리계 소설’의 전이과정과도 배치될 뿐만 아니라 이미 전으로 확장된 작품을 굳이 판소리화하려 했을까 하는 점에서 예외로 한다. 그렇다면 이들 모티프의 판소리적 수용은 몇 가지 기제로서 가능해지는데 그 하나는 ‘변신 기제’에서 찾아진다. 다른 판소리와 달리 <옹고집타령>의 경우 옹고집에 대한 징치 방법으로 ‘변신 기제’가 유용하게 활용되어서다. 다른 하나는 ‘징치 기제’에서 확인되는데 이는 옹고집 징치에 대한 도승과 상좌들의 논의에서 드러난다. 그리고 나머지 하나는 ‘진가 해법 기제’에서 보여진다. 진가 옹의 쟁투는 <옹고집타령>에서 가장 핵심적인 모티프일 뿐만 아니라 서사구조를 가능케 하는 사건이므로 그것의 활용은 적정했을 것이다.
