Mao Kun(茅坤) commented and appreciated “the Prose Selections of Eight Masters in Tang and Song Dynasty(唐宋八大家文鈔)”, especially focusing on the structure and the writing skills of Guwen(古文). He established the literary theory through the criticism of commentaries(評點) about writing and appreciating the prose of Tang(唐) and Song(宋) Dynasty, which could help efficiently the literary men to learn and admire it, and futhermore to pass the imperial examination. The literary theory through the criticism of commentaries(評點) by Mao Kun(茅坤) could be explained in three ways. First, it expressed the one of the Confucian literary criticism, “Writings are for conveying truth(文以載道)”. Second, it focused on the model and the structure of the prose of Tang(唐) and Song(宋) Dynasty and constructed the literary theory which contained the method of criticism and appreciation by commentaries. Third, it also emphasized the sentiment of the prose and the personal character of the author, which could form the uniqueness of the prose.

모곤은 《당송팔대가문초》의 평점 비평을 통하여 당송 고문의 문장을 품평하고 감상하였으며 문장의 편장 구조와 창작의 기교 등을 주의하여 분석하였다. 모곤의 평점 비평은 字法, 句法, 章法과 풍격, 기교 등 당송 문장의 창작 방법과 이론에 대해 논평함으로써 고문 비평과 미학을 더 높은 수준으로 끌어올렸다. 모곤에 의해 이론적으로 체계화된 고문 비평 이론은 많은 독서인들이 당송 고문을 학습하는 데 큰 도움이 되었다. 《당송팔대가문초》의 평점 비평에 반영된 모곤의 고문 비평 이론은 대략 세 가지로 귀납할 수 있다. 첫째, 전통적인 “文統觀”을 계승하여 비평 이론에서 문학의 전통적인 載道 관념을 반영하고 있다. 둘째, 문장의 “법식”에 주의하여 당송 고문의 작문과 구성의 법칙과 문학성 등을 탐구하였으며 체계적인 비평 이론으로 정리하여 당송 고문의 문학 감상과 비평 이론을 정립시켰다. 셋째, 문장이 전달하는 정감을 중시하고 작가의 개성적인 풍격에 주의를 기울여 당송 고문의 문학성을 부각시켰으며 당송팔대가 각 작가들의 문학적 개성을 보편성을 지닌 문학적 범주로 포괄해내었다. 바꿔 말하면, 당송팔대가 문장의 아름다운 정감과 문학적 개성은 모곤의 평점 비평을 통하여 널리 인식되었고 더불어 명대의 비평 이론으로 정리되었다. 그리하여 《당송팔대가문초》는 명대 문인들이 애독하는 중국 고문선집으로 자리잡게 되었다.
