This study conducted a survey on the awareness of the specific group of college students in their twenties to improve the seriousness of insurance fraud and emphasize the importance of preventing insurance fraud. From the analysis, it was found that media reports involved not only positive factors to prevent insurance fraud, improve the seriousness of insurance fraud and increase the possibility of the exposure of insurance fraud, but also negative ones which could cause or encourage many unspecified people or potential insurance fraud offenders to commit fraud. It was also found that male college students appreciate insurance fraud more seriously than female students. It was shown that there was no difference on the level of the awareness of insurance fraud regardless of college students’ majors or their future hopeful jobs on the financial industries. In order to restrain and prevent insurance fraud, it was suggested that applicable laws and specific penalties on insurance fraud and social adverse effects of insurance fraud should be included in the media reports. In addition, it was found that the level of the awareness of college students on the seriousness of insurance fraud was increased after this survey. In order to prevent insurance fraud, continuous prevention education on insurance fraud would be necessary and it was found that the primary responsibility of education would be insurance-operating institutions such as insurance companies and insurance associations and insurance regulatory institutions.

본 연구는 보험사기의 심각성 및 보험사기 예방의 중요성을 부각하고자 20대 대학생이라는 특정 집단의 설문을 통한 보험사기 인식도 조사이다. 검증결과 보험사기 언론보도가 보험 사기 예방, 보험사기 심각성 및 적발 가능성을 높이는 긍정적 측면이 있는 반면에 불특정 다수 또는 보험사기를 유발하려는 잠재적 보험사기자들에게 사기를 유발 내지는 조장할 수 있는 부정적 요소를 내포하고 있는 것으로 검증되었다. 또한 보험사기에 대해 남학생이 여학생보다 더 심각하게 인식하는 것으로 조사됐다. 대학생들의 전공 및 금융권 진로에 따른 보험사기 인식도 차이는 없는 것으로 나타났다. 보험사기 억제, 예방을 위하여 언론보도에 보험사기에 대한 법률 적용, 구체적인 형벌사항, 보험사기의 사회적 역기능 등의 내용이 포함되는 것이 바람직하다는 결과가 확인되었다. 더불어 설문응답 이후 20대 대학생들의 보험사기 언론보도에 대한 관심도와 보험사기 심각성 인식도가 증가한 것으로 나타났다. 보험사기 예방을 위해서는 지속적인 보험사기 예방교육이 필요하며, 일차적인 교육의 책임은 보험회사 및 협회 등 보험운용기관과 보험감독기관에 있다는 것이 확인되었다.
