Korean economy has sustained 10% of annual growth of trade volume on the average for 20 years. In 2011, Korea succeeded to reach 1 trillion dollars (USD) of trade volume. It is, however, uncertain to guarantee the future performance albeit the success of current performance. That is why, at this juncture, we need to think more on the paradigm shift of Korean trade policy. This study showed a way to find clue to attain sustainable growth of trade via paradigm shift of Korean trade policy. In a sense, existing paradigm of trade policy recourses to immizerizing growth model, which has it limit in that people have to sacrifice their quality of life to catch the target performance under the name of rapid growth trade model. We need to shift from rapid growth model to affordable growth model. In addition, Korean affordable growth model should be rooted on the basis of capitalism 4.0, which mean Korean companies dealing with international trade have to figure out the importance of sustainable growth of local partners, or co-prosperity in the long term. As an alternative, Korean companies can provide and help local partners to set up COI (cluster of innovation) in a global value chain.

한국무역은 지난 20년간 연평균 10%의 높은 성장을 지속해오며 1천억 달러의 무역규모를 달성한 이후, 23년만인 2011년 무역규모 1조 달러를 달성하였다. 그러나, 현재까지의 성과가 미래를 보장해 주는 것은 아니다. 무역을 통해 고도성장을 이룬 한국 경제는 양극화(Polarization)의 축소와 신성장동력(New Momentum)의 육성이라는 문제들도 안고 있다. 이탈리아, 영국, 네덜란드 등은 우리나라보다 앞서 무역 1조 달러를 달성하였지만 현재까지 무역규모 1조 달러 부근에서 머무르고 있는 실정이며, 일본 역시 2004년 1조 달러 달성 후, 아직도 1조 5천억 달러 부근에서 등락을 거듭하는 것을 볼 때, 한국도 이 시점에서 새로운 무역성장모형을 개발하고 무역패러다임을 전환하기 위한 노력이 필요하다. 본 연구를 통해 저자는 무역패러다임을 전환하고 한국경제가 지속가능한 성장을 이루어내기 위한 성장모형을 제시해 보고자 하였다. 기존의 성장모형이 경쟁력 창출과 파이를 키우는데 집중하는 과정에서 엘리트 전략적 수출정책의 한계를 지니고 있었다는 것을 지적하였다. 그리고, 무역규모 9위의 경제력을 지닌 한국은 국제사회에서 신뢰받고 책임있는 국가로서의 위상을 확립하여야 한다. 이에 따라 한국의 새로운 무역성장모형은 무역성장에 참여하는 주체의 폭을 넓히고 무역가치 생태계를 조성하는 모형이어야 함을 결론으로 제시하였다.
