This article analyzed the effects of commodity prices on commodity export countries' economies after 2002. Unlike common expectation, increases in commodity prices did not cause significant growth of commodity industries directly. The direct effect, which leads economic growth through increasing total demand and income in commodity industries, was not observed significantly in Canada and Australia because of the time lag effect. However, the indirect effect, which leads growth of total demand and income through non-commodity industries, was considered to be occurred significantly in Canada and Australia. This indirect effect can be diluted by real exchange rate appreciation. Improvement in terms of trade could appreciate real exchange rate and it could reduce profitability of traded good industries, for example manufacturing and could stimulate non-traded good industries such as utility and construction. Whether or not and if any, how much increases in commodity prices positively affect export countries' economies mainly depends on the length of the period of commodity price soaring and the amount of real exchange rate appreciation. After controlling real exchange rate appreciation, the positive effect was observed in Canada.

본 연구는 2002년 이후 원자재 가격의 지속적인 상승이 원자재 수출국의 경제에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지 분석하였다. 일반적인 기대와는 달리 원자재 가격상승이 원자재 수출국의 해당산업이 성장하는데 직접적인 공헌을 크게 하지는 못한 것으로 판단된다. 원자재 가격이 상승하여 해당 상품을 생산하는 산업의 수요 및 소득이 증가하고, 그 결과로 경제전반의 총수요가 증가하는 직접효과는 타임래그 효과로 인하여 캐나다와 호주의 경우 그리 크지 않은 것으로 관찰되었다. 이에 반해, 간접효과로 인한 총수요의 증가는 관찰되었다. 원자재 수출국인 캐나다와 호주의 경우 누적 총수요 증가율이 비수출국인 미국의 증가율과는 큰 차이를 보였다. 그러나 이러한 효과는 환율효과를 고려할 때 상당부분 상쇄될 수 있다. 원자재 가격상승은 수출국의 교역조건을 향상시키고 실질환율을 변동시킨다는 것을 확인 할 수 있었다. 실질환율의 변동은 경제전반의 성장보다는 실질환율에 상대적으로 영향을 많이 받는 산업과 작게 받는 산업의 경제에서 차지하는 비중을 변화시키는 것으로 나타났다.
