As Recognizing the reality that the modern Korean scenography has difficulty in research due to an absolute scarcity of data, the purpose of this thesis is to raise an issue of documenting and using data and to suggest a solution. Firstly, the stage sketch is the basic data in the field of modern Korean scenography research so it should be pre-collected extensively before other research activities. Also, pre-collected data are needed to upgrade an availability after clarifying the origin sources by gathering related people's material testimony. Secondly, it is estimated that the number of scenographer's personal document is low so it is needed to research more data without delay. The collected data should be utilized after thorough research but not be neglected. Thirdly, the performance picture should not fall short of gathering, documenting and using as important research data of modern Korean scenography. Also, the sources of data of performance picture should be clarified and made note thoroughly as a research. Fourthly, for the high leveled development in studying modern Korean history of scenography, collecting and utilizing the research data of comparative theatre should be taken for granted. As the modern era is same as Japanese colonial period, to research the Korean scenography of this era, collecting Japanese documents such as books, papers, magazines in a systematic way as well as researching modern Japanese performance, and utilizing these data should be actively done. Lastly, for the extensive research and the academic development of moden Korean scenography, it should be taken interest in collecting, documenting and utilizing the visual materials such as stage sketch, performance picture as well as paper documents. In this context, establishing an organization such as "Iconography archive for performing arts research" can be a specific alternative plan.

이 논문은 한국 근대 무대미술사 연구가 자료의 절대적 부족으로 연 구가 제대로 이루어지지 않는다는 사실을 인식하고 연구자료의 수집, 기록, 활용에서 문제점을 제시하고 그 해결책을 제시하기 위해 작성한 것이다. 첫째, 무대장치 입면도(Stage Sketch)는 한국 근대미술사 연구에서 가 장 기초가 되는 연구자료로서 먼저 광범위한 수집이 선행되어야 하며 이미 수집된 자료는 연구자료의 생산과 관련된 모든 사람들의 증언을 통해 출처를 분명하게 밝혀서 활용도를 높여야 한다. 둘째, 한국 근대무대미술과 관련된 무대미술가의 개인적 기록은 그 수자가 많지 않을 것으로 추정되기 때문에 더 많은 자료의 수집이 요청 된다. 활용적인 면에서 일단 수집된 기록은 방치할 것이 아니라 기록의 내용을 철저히 분석하여 활용하여야 한다. 셋째, 공연사진은 모두 한국 근대무대미술사 연구와 관련된 중요한 연구자료이니 만큼 수집, 기록, 활용에 모자람이 없어야 한다. 그리고 수집된 공연사진의 출처를 밝히고 이것을 학문적으로 기록하는 일을 철 저히 해야 한다. 넷째, 한국 근대미술사의 수준 높은 연구를 위해 비교연극학적 연구 자료의 수집과 활용은 당연시 되어야 한다. 근대 시기는 일본이 한국을 강점하고 있던 시기였기 때문에 이 시기의 한국 무대미술을 연구하기 위해서는 일본 근대의 공연을 연구하는 것은 물론 서적, 신문, 잡지, 포 스터, 프로그램 등 문헌자료를 체계적으로 수집하고 이를 활용하는 적 극성이 요청된다. 다섯째, 한국 근대 무대미술의 보편적 연구와 학문적 발전을 본격화 하기 위해서 문헌자료는 물론, 무대장치 입면도, 공연사진 등 시각자료 를 수집하고 분석하고 활용하는 일에 관심을 가져야 한다. 여기서 <공연예술 도상연구 아카이브> 같은 기구를 설립하여 학문적, 교육적으로 활용하는 것도 하나의 구체적 대안이 될 수 있다.
