In late Chosun dynasty, between 300～500 Korean correspondents went to Japan. By the way, based on a comparison study of Chosun literature and Japan literature, we can considerably discover that many correnspondents’ names were written differently in each literature, even if they are the same person. In this paper, Chosun’s literature (Tongshinsadeungrok) and Japan’s literature (Chosuntongshinchongrok) will be reviewed and studied bibliographically to find out why this phenomenon happened and how correspondents’ names were written differently. As a result, we have discovered some differences such as misspelling due to similar Chinese character, same pronunciation words, an omitted words, and a reversed words. On the other hand, person’s name was written in one’s literature where person’s job position or Nichname was written in other literature. There were much fewer errors found in Chosun’s literature (Tongshinsadeungrok) compared to Japan’s literature (Chosun- tongshinchongrok). The main reason why there are more errors in Japan’s literature is because it was not easy for Japan to collect accurate information of Chosun, and they often transcribe the manuscript which can lead to errors. Ultimately, the main purpose of this study is to correct the errors of one significant correspondent’s name which listed differently in two different literature.

조선 후기 통신사행 때, 적게는 300여명, 많게는 500여명의 사행원이 일본에 다녀왔다. 그런데 조선 측 문헌과 일본 측 문헌에 기록되어 있는 사행원의 명단을 비교 고찰해보면, 동일인물임에도 불구하고 성명이 각각 달리 소개되어 있는 경우를 적지 않게 볼 수 있다. 본고에서는 이 점에 초점을 맞추어 조선 측 문헌 『통신사등록(通信使謄錄)』과 일본 측 문헌 『조선통신총록(朝鮮通信總錄)』을 기본 텍스트로 선정하여, 각각 어떤 문헌인지 서지적 검토를 한 뒤 이어 동일인물로 추정되는데 양국 문헌에 달리 소개되어 있는 통신사행원들을 중심으로 이들의 성명이 어떻게 달리 표기되어 있는지 그리고 왜 이런 현상이 일어났는지 등을 고구해보았다. 그 결과, 한편으로는 유사한 한자로 인한 오기(誤記), 동음(同音)으로 인한 오기, 탈자와 뒤바뀜으로 인한 오기 등이 발견되었고, 다른 한편으로는 이름 대신 자호(字號)와 관직명으로 기록한 경우도 있음을 알 수 있었다. 대부분 조선 측 문헌인 『통신사등록』에는 오기가 적은 반면, 일본 측 문헌인 『조선통신총록』의 기록에 오기가 많았다. 일본 측 문헌에 오기가 많은 이유는 조선에 비해 정확한 정보를 얻기가 쉽지 않고, 또한 필사본을 보고 다시 필사를 하는 경우가 많았기 때문이다. 고유명사란, 어느 특정한 사람이나 사물을 다른 것과 구별하기 위하여 고유의 기호를 붙인 이름인데, 이처럼 사행원 명단에 적지 않은 오기가 발견된다는 것은 문제가 아닐 수 없어, 다양한 방증자료를 통해 명단의 오기를 바로잡는 데에도 역점을 두었다.
