Recently the webtoon is distinguished into various genres and is obtaining the popular support. Particularly, 『Joseon Dynasty Siltok』 following 『with God』, a webtoon based on the history, is not limited to the cartoon consisting only of texts and images but is comprised by movies and dramas under OSMU to develop with the people's active participation. The webtoon 『Joseon Dynasty Siltok』 to discuss in this paper is a work based on 'Annals of Joseon Dynasty containing the record for 472 years governed by 25 kings from Taejo to Chuljong and is reorganized by adding the writer's imagination. Particularly, 『Joseon Dynasty Siltok』 is being used as a form of the mobile messenger (Kakaotalk) considering 'Annals of Joseon Dynasty contained conversations each other shared rather than a summary of historic incidents. The success elements of the webtoon 『Joseon Dynasty Siltok』 can be analyzed as follows. First, 'Annals of Joseon Dynasty that was considered as difficult and solid was composed for everyone to read and understand easily by means of photo attachment, imoticon, reading & friend invitation, and other functions. Consequently, the function of mobile messenger (Kakaotalk) is, using purposefully pre-constructed messages to easily get the message out to its viewers, which strongly reflects a characteristic of communication itself. Although it can be a success factor that the expressive method is familiar in terms of function, eventually this success is attributed to being based on the exact fact of 『JWS』 DB. In this part, we can know the importance of the 'created material' we commonly say in the cultural contents area. Because the traditional created material anyone knew could lead a new change by the functional change. While the movies 'King's guy' and 'Gwanghae' utilized some parts of 『JWS』 DB as a material already, the webtoon 『JWJ』 utilized the whole of 『JWS』 DB more completely, which is remarkable. Also, the artist's planning power and imagination which interpreted the history in a modern way are excellent. There is a reason why the episode was organized by choosing materials that could attract interest among the record of 'Annals of Joseon Dynasty and why the creative title was added to each episode. And it aroused the curiosity by the picture or short text that could arouse curiosity at the prologue before starting that episode. It was interpreted in a modern way because the artist's imagination was added which was not recorded in the history record, and the imagination part is a device to escape from the problem of historic distortion and is regarded as what does not exist in the record. This is to utilized unique and well-known Kakaotalk's function as a narrative device to take advantage of the characteristics of dramatic narrative development. Author speaks his mind through exchange of dialogues between characters in the webtoon. Based on historical facts, each episode of webtoon 'Annals of the Joseon Dynasty' clearly portrays its message via dialogues between characters and complete the story within the constraints of Kakaotalk chat room message window. Ultimately, the success of webtoon 『Joseon Dynasty Siltok』 are the effective usage of function of mobile messenger (Kakaotalk) to reflects a characteristics of communication and historical facts as narrative device to unfold dramatic narrative development. When using the historic material we know as a creation material like this, we can pay attention to the functional use method because it is certain the webtoon 『Joseon Dynasty Siltok』 is a case that fully utilized 『JWS』 DB by using the functional part of Kakaotalk well. Also, its study value is high because it contributed to expanding the direction of the applicability of DB largely. It is expected the constant attempt to develop materials will be made starting from this study.

최근의 웹툰은 다양한 장르로 구분되면서 사람들로부터 대중적인 지지를 얻고 있다. 특히, 역사를 소재로 한 웹툰 『신과 함께』, 『조선왕조실톡』은 글과 이미지로만 구성된 만화로만 한정된 것이 아니라 영화, 드라마 등으로 OSMU 되어 많은 사람들의 인기를 얻고 있다. 이 글에서 다룰 웹툰『조선왕조실톡』은 태조에서 철종까지 25대 임금이 다스렸던 472년 동안의 기록이 담긴 『조선왕조실록』을 역사소재로 하여 작가의 상상력을 더하여 재구성한 작품이다. 주목할 것은 『조선왕조실록』이 역사적 사건의 요약이라기보다 서로가 주고받는 대화를 적고 있다는 점에 착안하여 모바일 메신저(카카오톡)의 형식으로 활용하고 있다는 점이다. 이 글에서는 이러한 웹툰『조선왕조실톡』의 성공 요인을 몇 가지로 나누어 분석하였다. 첫째, 어렵고 딱딱하다고 느끼기 쉬운 『조선왕조실록』을 사진 첨부 및 이모티콘, 읽음 및 친구초대, 그 밖의 기능들을 활용하여 누구나 읽기 쉽고 이해하기 편하게 내용을 구성했다는 점이다. 특히 모바일 메신저(카카오톡)의 기능은 상대방을 이해시키기 위해 의도적으로 만들어 낸 메시지로 커뮤니케이션의 특징을 반영시켰다. 이러한 기능은 표현방식이 친숙하다는 이유도 있겠지만 결국은 『조선왕조실록』 DB의 정확한 사실에 기반을 두었기에 이와 같은 성공도 이끌 수 있었을 것이라 판단된다. 이 부분에서 우리는 문화콘텐츠 영역에서 흔히 말하는 ‘창작소재’의 중요성을 알 수 있다. 누구나 알고 있는 전통 창작소재가 기능상의 변화로 새로운 변화를 이끌어 낼 수 있었기 때문이다. 이미, 영화 ‘왕의 남자’나 ‘광해’의 경우 『조선왕조실록』 DB의 일부 대목을 소재로 활용하였던 것에 비하여, 웹툰 『조선왕조실톡』은 『조선왕조실록』 DB 전체를 보다 더 전면적으로 활용했다는 점을 주목할 만한 것이다. 둘째, 『조선왕조실톡』은 역사를 현대적으로 해석한 작가의 기획력과 상상력이 뛰어나다는 점이다. 『조선왕조실록』의 기록 중 흥미를 이끌어 낼만한 소재를 선택하여 에피소드를 구성했다는 점과 에피소드별로 창의적인 제목을 덧붙인 것이 그 대표적인 예이다. 그리고 그 에피소드를 시작하기 전 프롤로그에서 궁금증을 유발시킬 수 있는 그림이나 짧은 글로 호기심을 유발시키기도 했다. 아울러 역사기록에는 기록되지 않은 작가의 상상력이 덧붙여져 현대적으로 해석하여, 상상의 부분은 역사왜곡의 문제를 벗어나는 장치로 ‘기록에 없는 것’으로 정리해주고 있다. 이 과정에서 카카오톡의 기능을 통한 희곡적 서사전개의 특성을 서사전개에 활용했다. 예를 들어 등장인물들 간에 서로 주고받는 극적 대사를 통하여 이야기 하고 있는 경우이다. 그 결과 웹툰 『조선왕조실톡』에서는 역사적 사실을 바탕으로 극적 대사를 통하여 이야기 하며 각 편마다 전달하고자 하는 극적 내용이 명확하고, 제한된 카카오톡 메시지 창 안에서 하나의 이야기를 완결시켰다. 이처럼 모바일 메신저(카카오톡)의 기능을 통한 커뮤니케이션 특성을 잘 반영했다는 점, 역사적 사실을 극적 대사로 활용하여 희곡적 서사로 전개해 나갔다는 점이 웹툰 『조선왕조실톡』의 성공요인이라 하겠다. 웹툰『조선왕조실톡』은 우리가 알고 있는 역사소재를 창작소재로서 활용할 때, 기능적인 활용방식, 예를 들어 카카오톡의 기능적인 부분의 활용, 『조선왕조실록』 DB를 충분히 응용한 중요한 사례가 될 수 있다. 이 글에서는 이러한 중요한 차례의 의미와 차후 소재 개발을 위한 방향을 다루어 보았다.
