This article focuses on decoding the meanings found in the representation of the actual events in the North Korean documentary The Successors, as well as studying how filmic elements codify systemically the concrete subjects by assigning it a language within the dominant codes. In this regard, the study deconstructs the generative structure of meanings and traces the significations presented through the medium. After analyzing the representational elements, we found that one of the characteristic camera techniques was its stable camerawork. This implies that the filmic signs are produced by a well-trained professional. For instance, North Korean documentary film aptly applies the optical properties and angles of the camera lens. Such cases are remarkably evident after Kim Jong-il's entry. Secondly, although filmic signs are tightly controlled, it notably exhibits various artistic evolutions. In other words, it is filmed with a pictorial sensitivity with the beauty of a moderate edit, and considers the more progressive standards of the masses. Also, by assigning certain symbolic meanings into an insert shot and metaphorically depicting them, it allows an audience to easily synchronize with the given images. Thirdly, in its usage of audio techniques, the documentary is filled up with background music. Such overuse of music well serves its role of stressing a framed thematic consciousness. However, it distracts audiences from the emphasized points of the filmic flow and tension - the resultant effect is one of being stuffed. North Korean documentary film's signification is constructed to sympathize with people's lives, create socialistic drive, and represent the cause for a Socialist revolution based on realistic methods. Furthermore, North Korean documentary films seek artistic transformation to gain the audience's sympathy. Especially with Kim Jong-il's arrival, while their political purposes are still important documentary films show artistic changes that respond to 'the people's upgraded intention'.

이 논문은 북한 기록영화 <계승자들>에서 구체적 사건이 재현되는 과정에서 표출하는 의미를 해석하는데 주안점을 두고, 영상기호들이 언어가 부여한 주제를 구체적으로 어떻게 지배적 약호 속에서 체계적으로 생산하는가를 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위해 의미의 생성 구조를 해체하여 매개를 통해 표상된 의미를 추적한다. 표상요소 분석 결과, 첫째 카메라 기법의 특징은 카메라 워킹이 안정적이라는점이다. 이는 곧 잘 훈련된 전문가에 의한 효과적인 영상기호 생산을 의미한다. 즉, 카메라 렌즈의 광학적 특성과 앵글을 잘 활용하고 있다. 이러한 현상은 김정일의 등장 이후 두드러지게 나타나고 있다. 둘째, 편집 기법의 특징은 영상기호가 비록 통제에 귀속되어 있었지만 다양한예술적 진화를 뚜렷이 보이고 있다. 즉, 대중의 높아진 눈높이를 고려하여 회화적감성으로 촬영한 후 절제된 편집미를 보여주고 있다. 또한 삽입화면에 상징의 의미를 부여하고 은유적으로 묘사함으로써, 관객이 제시된 화면과 동기화가 더 용이하게 구성되고 있다. 셋째, 사운드기법의 특징은 배경음악으로 꽉 찬 형태를 보이고 있다. 배경음악의 과잉 사용은 설정된 주제의식의 강조에는 잘 복무하고 있으나 영화흐름의 강조점과 긴장감을 떨어트려 결과적으로 담백하지 못한 결과를 초래하고 있다. 이와 같이 <계승자들>은 민중의 삶에 공감하는 방식으로 재현되어 인민의 사회주의적 충동을 창출하고 있으며, 사회주의 혁명에 나서야 하는 이유를 리얼리즘 창작방법에 입각하여 재현하고 있다. 더 나아가 북한 기록영화는 관객의 공감을 얻기위해 예술적 변화를 모색하고 있다. 특히 김정일의 등장과 더불어 기록영화의 정치적 목적은 여전히 강조되지만, 높아진 ‘인민들의 지향’에 맞춰 예술적 변화를 보이고 있다.
