The purpose of this study was to analyze and improve the contents of career education in 5th and 6th grade textbooks developed under the 2009 Revised National Curriculum. The results of this study are summarized as follows. When the textbooks of each subject were analyzed, the contents of career education were reflected 399 times in total. The subjects closely related to the contents of career education were Korean, Ethics, Social Studies, and Practical Sciences. In contrast, Mathematics and Science contained few contents of career education. The contents of career education did not distribute evenly among the four large target domains but concentrated on specific domains. According to the results of analysis, domain ‘Self understanding and social competence development’ was reflected most, and domain ‘Understanding works and the world of work’ was second most. There were omitted achievement indicators, and some achievement indicators were heavily redundant, and as a result, variation among the middle domains within a large domain was very large. The findings of this study suggest that the following should be considered and studied in the development of curriculums and textbooks for systematic career education in elementary school. The goals and contents of career education to be covered in each subject should be designed in advance and reflected in the development of the curriculums and textbooks. For domains and contents of career education that can hardly be covered in the subjects, it is necessary to develop separate supplementary materials or programs, and to support the execution of systematic career education using the hours of creative experience activities.

본 연구는 2009 개정 교육과정에 따른 초등학교 5, 6학년 전 교과의 교과서를「학교 진로교육 목표와 성취기준」의 ‘초등학교 진로교육 세부목표 및 성취지표’를 준거로 분석하여 교과서에 반영된 진로교육 내용에 대한 개선점을 제시하고자 하였으며 주요 연구 결과를 요약하여 제시하면 다음과 같다. 교과서에 반영된 진로교육 내용을 교과별로 분석한 결과 진로교육 내용이 총 399회 반영되어 있었으며, 국어, 도덕, 사회, 실과교과는 진로교육 내용을 비교적 많이 포함하고 있었으나 수학, 과학교과는 진로교육 내용을 거의 담고 있지 못한 것으로 나타났다. 대영역 별로 살펴보면 4개의 목표 영역이 고루 나타나지 않고 특정 목표 영역에 편중되어 있는 것으로 나타났으며, ‘자아이해와 사회적 역량 개발’ 영역이 가장 많이 반영되어있었고, 다음으로는 ‘일과 직업세계의 이해’ 영역이 많이 반영되어있었다. 또한 누락된 성취지표가 있었으며 특정 성취지표의 중복이 많아 대영역 내 중영역간 편차가 매우 컸다. 따라서, 사전에 각 교과별로 다루어야 할 진로교육 목표와 내용을 개발하여 진로교육이 교육과정과 교과서 개발 과정에서 부터 반영될 수 있도록 해야 하며, 교과에서 다루기 힘든 진로교육 영역이나 내용은 별도의 보조교재나 프로그램을 개발하여 다양하고 체계적인 진로교육이 이루어 질수 있도록 지원해야 할 것이다.
