Ma Jong-Ki is one of the most important Korean poets to write the poem by Korean language as an American immigrant. The purpose of this study is to clearly find the meaning the consciousness of immigrant poet and the characteristics of poetic imagination in Ma jong- Ki’s poetries by the analysis of influence for the change of consciousness of space from fatherland to immigration country. And also this study try to explain how this poetic imagination purifies the immigrant poet’s lack of desire and negative emotion. Early poems of Ma Jong-Ki shows the collision between the nostalgia for fatherland and the life of immigration country. This causes the serious trouble to poetic self. His poetries try to change the poetic images from hard and solid matters to flexible and soft ones in order to free from troubles. In Ma Jong-Ki’s early poems, the poetic teller is bounded by the geographic or the physical space because of depression for the loss of fatherland after immigration to USA. The image of space in the immigration country is, for instance, the glass which exclusively cut or reflect the feeling of poetic self. So poetic teller confuses by the double life to stay in USA externally and in Korea internally. However the poetic self does not feel free until his poetic imagination changes the images of space of the geographic or the physical space to the flexible and soft images in space such as flying birds, sound, and water. This change make the poetic self experiences to fly to the unlimited open space and to feel freedom. So the nationality or the name of country which have been suppressed the freedom of poetic self lose their powers. In the open spaces, poetic self can meet the family members who are blocked by long distance between immigration to fatherland or by the boundary between the life and death. This study can find that poet’s consciousness of space is bound up with the process to conquer all the troubles by the immigration. The process to free from the consciousness of space bounded by the geographic border or the physical space is same with the change from closed space to open space. Accordingly, solid images are changed to air images or liquid ones and earthly images are changed to heavenly ones. And also the inside of poetic self changes from closed mind to open mind, from lack of freedom to unlimited freedom and from troubles to joy.

본 연구는 마종기의 시에서 공간 이미지의 변화가 이민자 의식에 미치는 영향을 분석함으로써 그 시적 상상력의 특징을 구명하고 아울러 공간 의식의 변화에 따라 시적 자아의 결핍된 욕망과 부정적인 감정이 어떻게 정화되고 자유로워지는가를 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 마종기의 시에서 도미 초기에 고국의 공간은 이민의 공간은 불가피하게 충돌하며, 심각한 갈등과 괴로움을 유발한다. 이러한 고통으로부터 벗어나기 위해 시적 상상력의 이미지는 경직되고 고정된 물질성에서 보다 유연하고 신축성이 있는 성질로 변화된다. 도미 후에 쓴 초기시들에서는 고국에 대한 과도한 그리움과 심리적인 집착 때문에 상실감을 동반하면서 지리적인 경계와 물리적인 공간에 예속되는 양상을 보인다. 새로운 공간은 자아의 감정이나 정서를 차단하거나 반사하는 유리 이미지와 같이 배타적으로 나타나며 시적 자아는 외적으로는 미국에서 살지만 내적으로는 과거의 장소에 거주하면서 갈등과 혼란을 겪는다. 그는 고국의 공간이나 인물을 미국의 새로운 공간에 투사하거나 동화함으로써 훼손된 동일성을 회복하는데, 그러한 시적 방법은 고국의 공간에 예속되어 자유롭지 못함을 드러내는 것이다. 시적 자아의 공간에 대한 의식이 자유로워지는 것은 시적 상상력이 지리적인 경계와 물리적인 공간의 이미지에서 새, 소리, 안개, 물 등과 같이 탈경계적이고 탈공간적인 이미지로 전환될 때이다. 대상에 대한 기억이나 고국의 공간의 투사 또는 동화가 과거의 기능, 현실의 기능을 하는 상상력이라면 새를 비롯한 비상과 상승의 이미지는 미래의 기능, 비현실적인 기능을 통해 과거와 현실을 초월하게 하는 상상력이다. 유연한 물질 이미지로의 변화는 시적 자아로 하여금 무한히 열린 공간으로 상승하면서 자유를 체험하게 한다. 따라서 자아의 의식을 단단하게 묶어놓고 자유를 구속하던 지리적인 경계나 물리적인 장소, 국적이나 이름 따위는 구속력을 상실한다. 단절된 공간이 열리고 외부와 내면이 자유롭게 소통함으로써 시적 자아는 공간적인 거리와 삶과 죽음의 경계로 차단된 가족과의 자유로운 만남도 상상 속에서 가능해지게 된다. 자아는 더 이상 공간의 구속을 받지 않고 언제든지 고국의 장소에 가 닿을 수 있고 생사의 경계를 초월하여 원하는 가족을 만나는 자유를 누린다. 본 연구에서는 마종기 시의 공간의식이 이민자 의식의 갈등과 조국에 대한 그리움을 극복하는 과정과 밀접한 상관성이 있음을 확인하였다. 마종기의 시가 지리적 물리적 공간성에서 벗어나 내면의 무한한 자유를 획득하는 과정은 닫힌 공간에서 열린 공간으로, 경계의 차단과 단절에서 소멸과 해체로 나아가는 공간의 변화와 궤를 같이 한다. 이에 따라 고체성의 이미지는 기체성 또는 액체성의 이미지로, 지상적인 이미지는 천상적인 이미지로 각각 변화한다. 이런 변화에 따라 시적 자아의 내면은 폐쇄적인 의식에서 개방적인 의식으로, 부자유에서 자유로, 고통에서 환희로 나아가게 된다. 이러한 긍정적인 변화는 원초적인 장소를 상실함으로써 생긴 자아의 갈등과 고통을 능동적으로 변화시킴으로써 쟁취한 것이라는 점에서 의미가 있다.
