In this paper, I will critically examine the problems of violence in Myths and Religion based on the scapegoat’s theory of René Girard. Myths are the products of human culture and are closely connected to religion. I think that to analyze the problems of violence in myths and religion is the core solution to the violence. And besides, to relate the violence with the Homo Sacer of Giorgio Agamben, I want to set the basis to construct a peaceful and healthy society that is no more scapegoat and naked human. Violence has the power to destroy our daily life and our community. The characteristics of violence are sometimes exposed easily, but sometimes hidden behind existing social structures. But when the violence occurs, it defeats human reason and rationality and it drives the community to a whirlpool of violence. Finally it causes the collapse of the community. So we must prevent and root out the violence absolutely through the help of private and public cooperation and the exercising of public power. Unlike in the past, the violence today is a barbarous social evil committed by radical terrorist groups like ISIS. Violence is deep-rooted in human culture. The culture elected on the basis of the violence and sustained on it. According to the scapegoat’s theory by René Girard, when the conflict of the community becomes serious and the crisis of the community reaches a climax, the community seeks for a victim to solve their problem. These scapegoating methods used to appear in ancient myths and rituals. The scapegoat and the Homo Sacer are the shadow dimensions of the partially violent society. So we must overcome the structural contradiction to expel them out by discrimination and exclusion. Besides, we are responsible for making our society peacefully coexist and be ruled by love and justice. Homo Sacer’s means naked life, socially worthless and defenseless beings exposed to violence. They are the poor objects not to be protected beyond the bounds of law and social care. Therefore to root out the innocent victims and the violence, we need to follow the way of reconciliation and peace that the Bible presents to us. Toward the injustice, Jesus responds with nonviolence and love and finally he transforms evil to good. Through the cross of Jesus Christ, the past violence and the reality of the evil were exposed and simultaneously the path of reconciliation and peace had opened to us eternally.

본 소고에서는 지라르의 희생양 이론에 기초하여 폭력의 기원이 되는 신화와 종교 속에서의 폭력의 문제를 비판적으로 분석하고자 한다. 신화는 문화의 산물이면서 종교와 밀접한 연관성을 갖는데, 신화와 종교 속에 내재된 폭력을 비판적으로 분석하는 것은 현 시대에 만연하고 있는 폭력해결의 실마리가 되기 때문이다. 아울러 폭력의 문제를 조르주 아감벤의 호모 사케르와 연관시켜 고찰함으로써 희생양이나 벌거벗은 인간들이 더 이상 없는 평화로운 사회 건설을 위한 기초를 놓고자 한다. 폭력은 우리의 일상생활과 공동체를 무너뜨리는 파괴적인 힘이다. 폭력은 쉽게 드러나기도 하지만 사회 구조에 잠재되어 잘 드러나지 않는 특성을 지닌다. 하지만 폭력이 분출될 경우 폭력은 인간의 이성과 합리성을 마비시키고, 공동체를 폭력의 소용돌이로 휘몰아 갈등을 증폭시키고, 공동체를 붕괴시키는 요인으로 작용한다. 과거와는 달리, 현재 IS와 같은 극단적인 테러단체에서 자행되는 폭력은 악의 뿌리로 조속히 근절되어야 할 사회악이다. 폭력은 인간의 문화에 깊이 뿌리 내리고 있다. 문화는 폭력에 기초해서 세워졌고, 폭력에 의해 지탱되어 왔다. 지라르의 희생양 이론에 따르면, 공동체 내의 갈등이 고조되고 위기감이 절정에 이르면 이를 해소하기 위한 방편으로 희생양을 찾게 되는데, 이러한 희생양 만들기는 신화와 제의 속에서 잘 드러난다. 호모 사케르는 벌거벗은 생명(인간)을 의미하는데, 이는 ‘사회적으로 무화’된 존재가 폭력에 무방비 상태로 노출된 모습이다. 호모 사케르인 희생양은 법 혹은 어떤 사회적 책임의 테두리 바깥으로 밀려나 전혀 보호를 받지 못하는 가련한 대상들이다. 희생양과 호모 사케르는 위험한 폭력사회가 만들어낸 어두운 모습들이다. 우리는 이들을 차별과 배제를 통해 예외상태로 내모는 구조적인 모순을 극복하고, 사랑과 정의가 다스리는 평화와 공존의 공동체를 만들 책임이 있다. 이를 위해서 우리는 성서가 제시한 화해와 평화의 길을 따를 필요가 있다. 예수는 자신이 당한 불의에 대해 비폭력적 사랑으로 대응하였고, 마침내 악을 선으로 바꾸셨다. 예수 그리스도의 십자가를 통해 인간과 세상을 지배하던 죄의 세력인 폭력은 그 실체가 분명하게 드러났고, 이와 동시에 폭력을 극복하는 화해와 평화의 길이 우리에게 열리게 되었다.
