In recent years, Pentecostalism has been expanding rapidly not only in Korea but also in other countries. Some scholars regarded it as the third wave or a new force in history of Christianity. Pentecostalism is biblically rooted in the event described in Chapters one and two of Acts of the Apostles. The Pentecostal movement emerged in the early 20th century in the Unites States and its main elements were influenced by Wesleyan and African-American spritualities. Pentecostalism is an important form of Christian spirituality in Korea. Pentecostalism in Korea is unique, because it has been influenced by other traditional religions such as Shamanism, Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. Pentecostalism contributed much to a making of Christianity in Korea. It seems a unique history of the Holy Spirit, which is different from other types of Pentecostalism. It is undeniable that Korean Christians are still living under its powerful influence, especially in the matter of their spirituality. However, it is also hard to distinguish Pentecostalism from shamanism, because shamanism as the oldest religion in Korea had been influencing all religions including Christianity. The study of Pentecostalism is important because it can help us to develop a true Christian spirituality in Korea by recognizing its negative elements. In this article, I first described the situation of the Korean Church in general, focusing on Pentecostal phenomena. Secondly, I defined the term “Pentecostalism” in both historical and biblical perspectives. I searched for its roots in general such as biblical roots, Black oral root, and Wesleyan spiritual roots in the United States. Thirdly, I presented the various ways in which Korean Pentecostalism varies from Pentecostalism in other regions such as the United States and Latin America. Next, I explored Pentecostal Spirituality in the Korean context in relation to shamanism, focusing on its characteristics and impact on church growth. Then, I attempted to give some critical, theological analysis of Korean Pentecostalism. In conclusion, I presented some new understandings of the Holy Spirit as a theological foundation for spiritual direction and formation in the context of the Korean Church.

최근 서구 그리스도교계의 관심 중 하나는 오순절주의(Pentecostalism)이다. 전 세계에서 가장 빠르게 성장하고 있는 교단이 오순절 교단이다. 미국에서는 이미 ‘오순절주의’라는 용어가 사전에 기록될 정도로 분명한 신앙적, 신학적 경향으로 자리매김된 지 오래이다. 또 ‘오순절 신학협의회’가 구성되었고, 학자들이 연례대회를 통해 많은 연구물을 발표하고 있다. 사실 오순절주의는 지난 1970-1980년대 한국 개신교회를 주도한 운동이었으며, 지금도 한국 개신교회 현장에서 큰 영향을 끼치고 있다. 하지만 한국 교회에서는 이 오순절주의에 대한 신학적인 논의가 활발하지 못하다. 오순절주의를 지지하는 쪽에서는 오순절 신학이니 오순절 성령운동이니 하고 많은 말들을 하고 있지만, 아직 제대로 된 신학적인 논의라고 보기에 어려운 경우가 많다. 반면에 진보적인 신학 쪽에서는 아예 이런 주제에 대해 논의할 가치조차 없는 것으로 생각하여, 언급조차 하지 않는 실정이다. 필자는 오순절주의야말로 한국 개신교의 영성을 말할 때 빠져서는 안 될 중요한 주제라고 생각한다. 좋든 싫든 간에 오순절주의는 지난 130여 년 동안 한국 개신교회의 신앙정서에 가장 깊은 영향을 끼쳤고, 지금도 대부분의 한국 교회와 밀접한 관계를 맺고 있기 때문이다. 과연 오순절주의는 한국 기독교의 미래가 될 수 있는가? 오순절주의는 21세기 그리스도교 영성의 대안으로 자리잡을 수 있는가? 본 논문에서는 오순절주의가 무엇인지에 대해 개략적으로 살펴보면서 그것에 대한 신학적인 평가를 시도하였다. 본 논문에서는 먼저 오순절주의의 개념과 특성에 대해 살펴본 다음, 한국 오순절주의의 태동에 직접적으로 영향을 끼친 미국 오순절주의의 역사와 특징을 살펴보았다. 오순절주의는 사도행전 1장과 2장에 묘사되어 있는 사도들의 성령 체험에 뿌리를 두고 있으며, 전 세계에 확대되어 그리스도교의 중요한 전통으로 자리잡았다. 또한 오순절주의는 오순절성령운동, 은사운동, 카리스마 운동 등으로도 부른다. 미국의 오순절주의 운동은 1901년 감리교 목사 팔햄(C. F. Palham)이 캔사스 주의 토페카에서 일으켰다는 설과 1906년 로스앤젤리스의 아주사(Azusa) 부흥집회에서 시작되었다는 설이 있다. 또한 미국 오순절주의는 웨슬리적 영성과 흑인 영성이 영향을 끼쳤다는 점이 특징이다. 다음으로, 본 논문에서는 한국 오순절주의의 특징을 살펴본 다음, 그것의 의의와 문제점들을 신학적인 관점에서 기술했다. 한국 오순절주의는 유교, 불교, 도교, 무속 등과 같은 전통 종교들의 영향을 받았다. 특히 무속적인 영향을 강하게 받음으로 인해 한국 오순절주의는 통성기도, 새벽기도, 귀신축출, 치유, 기적, 물질적 번영 등에 대해 강조하게 되었고, 급기야 “그리스도교적 샤머니즘”이라는 비판까지 받고 있는 실정이다. 그만큼 한국 오순절주의는 신학적으로 해결해야할 여러 가지 문제들이 있는데, 가령 예수와 무당의 차이, 육체적인 치유의 문제, 무속과의 차이 등을 규명하는 문제이다. 결론에서는, 오순절주의가 한국 교회의 참다운 영성이 되기 위한 몇 가지 과제들을 제안했다.
