Nowadays religion seems to have lost its influence to the people in contemporary society. But on the other hand there we can see a lot of people are engaged in occult and superstition or parapsychology. Moreover, we see Islamic fundamentalists and Christian fundamentalists making many problems in the world. Probably, people’s religiosity doesn’t shrink all even in the modern society. That’s why we will have to consider in depth the relationship between the human being and the religion. Freud focused to the negative aspect of the religion, but analytical psychologist Carl G. Jung regarded it differently. He considered the positive aspects of the religion. So he insisted that true religion is the great symbol systems that help to psychotherapy. For C. G. Jung the religion does not mean the Christianity, the Buddhism or the Confucianism, as they are the denominations. The religion means, for him, the changed attitude of human being after having a certain experience of numen which represents the sacred or divine being. As people meet the divine being or transcendental presence, his/her state of consciousness and attitude change through that experience. According to Jung, there is an area that might be called as the pantheon in human depth which is the world of gods. It makes gods, myths, symbols and it brings the infinite meaning and dynamism to our lives. It seems that people ignore this area as time goes by, But the more people forget this area, the more people get sick for anxiety, depression or neurosis. Therefore we should recognize the existence of this area in ourselves, and integrate it. We can integrate it through the religion, because there is a strong psychic factor which is able to integrate all sorts of divisions in us. That factor is always eager to actualize and when it appears, people are influenced by it and finally changed. We call it religious experience. Unfortunately many people does not consider it and try to receive the bless of God only to cling to the superficial life. So C. G. Jung insisted in the importance of the experience of that area and the right relationship with God.

현대 사회에서 종교는 사람들에게 점점 더 영향력을 잃어버리는 듯하지만 다른 한편에서 보면 현대 사회에 들어와서 많은 사람들은 점술과 미신이나 심령과학에 몰두하고 있으며, 이슬람의 근본주의와 기독교 근본주의는 세계 각지에서 많은 문제를 일으키고 있다. 사람들의 종교성은 현대 사회에 들어와서도 전혀 위축되지 않은 것이다. 그러므로 우리는 현대 사회에서 기독교가 올바르게 서려면 인간과 종교의 관계에 대해서 심층적으로 고찰해야 할 것이다. 프로이드는 종교를 비판적으로 고찰했지만 분석심리학자 칼 융은 종교의 긍정적인 측면에 관해서도 주장하였다. 진정한 종교는 정신치료에 도움을 주는 위대한 상징체계라고 주장했던 것이다. 융에게 있어서 종교는 기독교, 불교, 유교 등 특정한 교단(敎團)을 말하거나 단순한 신조를 말하는 것이 아니라 사람들이 신적인 존재를 만나서 특정한 체험을 하고, 그 체험을 통해서 변화된 의식의 태도를 의미했다. 융에 의하면 인간의 내면에는 여태까지 신이나 신화나 상징들을 만들어서 가히 만신전(pantheon)이라고 부를 수 있는 영역이 있으며, 그 영역은 우리 삶에 무한한 의미와 역동성을 가져다준다고 주장했던 것이다. 그러나 사람들이 이 영역을 무시하지만 사람들이 이 영역을 무시하면 무시할수록 이 영역은 불안이나 우울증이나 신경증 등으로 나타나 사람들 괴롭힌다. 그러므로 우리는 우리 안에 있는 이 영역의 존재를 깨닫고, 그 안에서 우리 삶을 통합해야 한다. 우리는 종교를 통해서 그 영역을 통합할 수 있는데, 그 이유는 우리 안에 모든 분열을 통합하게 하는 강력한 정신요소가 있기 때문이다. 그 요소는 언제나 스스로 실현되려고 하기 때문이며, 그 요소가 나타날 때 사람들은 그 힘에 사로잡히고 그의 삶은 변화되는데, 그것이 종교체험이다. 그러나 현대 사회에서 많은 사람들은 이 영역을 알지 못하고, 단순히 복만 받으려고 하거나, 코앞에 있는 어려움만 없애주도록 비는 정도의 신앙생활에 만족한다. 우리 삶의 깊이를 헤아릴 줄 모르고 영혼의 신비를 알지 못하면서 피상적인 삶에 매달리는 것이다. 그래서 융은 이런 사람들에게 강력한 힘을 가진 하나님에 대한 체험이 무엇보다도 중요하다고 강조하였다. 하나님은 최고의 가치를 지닌 존재이기 때문에, 하나님과 올바른 관계를 맺고 사는 사람들은 하나님을 중심으로 한 세계관을 가지고 살 수 있으며, 이런 세계관은 그들의 삶에 대단히 중요하기 때문이다.
