As Walter Bruggemann asserts, preaching is a ministry to redescribe the world. Redescribing is to redefine “the initial description of our life in the world according to the dominant metanarrative” of the society by the biblical text, which “functions among us as a second thought.” In the respect that the essential functions is to redefine and give a daring alternative to the world, preaching is “an audacious and dangerous act.” The task of preaching is to redescribe the world and to provide “a flesh identity and bold vocation” to the churches and Christians in each age. The early Korean church had done the ministry to redescribe the world cooperatively very well, even though it was small in its membership at that time. However, the Korean church confronted entirely new situation in 1930 or thereabouts to challenge in its mission and identity. It was challenged, in particular, in the political, economical, eclectical, and spiritual context very seriously. Passing a half of the century since it received the gospel, the young Korean church had experienced very serious crisis. There were some preachers to make a time of “great possibility” for the church. They provided new identity and way of life to them through proclamation of God's word. How could they overcome the crisis? What kind of trend in preaching did they take? This kind of questions provides very good insights to the contemporary Korean church, which confronts entirely new situation passing the second century since planting the church in Korea. In this respect, an aim of this article is to study the preaching ministry by Rev. Yongdo Kim, who provided a new spiritual wave and challenge to the Korean church in the most critical time, in 1930 or thereabouts, even though the time of his ministry was very short.

월터 브루그만이 주장한대로 설교는 세상을 “다시 묘사하는”(redescribe) 사역이다. 다시 묘사한다는 것은 그 사회의 우세하는 거대담론(metanarrative)에 따라 설명 되는 “삶의 초기의 묘사”를 하나님의 말씀을 통해 다시 규정하고 그것을 변혁해 간다는 의미이다. 설교의 중요한 임무는 세상을 새롭게 하고 바로 세워가는 것이며, 오늘의 상황에 대한 재묘사라는 점에서 변혁적이고 전복적인 특성을 가진다. 설교자는 성경 본문의 세계를 불러내어 그것을 보여주고, 해석하면서 믿음의 공동체로 하여금 “새로운 정체성과 담대한 소명”을 발견도록 소환하여 그것을 새롭게 하도록 돕는다는 점에서 새로운 가능성의 사역이다. 또한 기존의 가치와 사회적 실재(social reality)와 대면하고, 텍스트를 통해 세계를 새롭게 형성해 간다는 점에서 대담하면서도 위험한 사역이다. 초기 한국 교회는 이러한 사역을 잘 수행했지만 1930년 전후는 한국사회 뿐만 아니라 교회에도 그 존립 자체의 위기를 경험했던 시기였다. 정치적, 경제적, 교회적, 영적 상황은 이 사역을 수행함에 있어서 큰 위험 요인이 내재되어 있었다. 복음이 전파된 지 반세기가 채 되지 않았던 어린교회에는 큰 위기상황이었음에 틀림이 없다. 이러한 시대에 위대한 가능성의 순간을 만들어간 설교자들이 있었다. 그들은 하나님의 말씀을 통해 교회와 그리스도인들의 정체성을 새롭게 하면서 그 시대를 밝혔고, 마땅히 나아가야 할 길을 제시하였다. 그들은 그 위기를 어떻게 극복했는가? 설교자들은 당시 어떤 설교 경향을 취하였는가? 이러한 질문은 오늘 대내외적으로 많은 위기 현상에 직면한 한국교회 강단을 새롭게 하는데 좋은 통찰력을 제시해 준다. 본고는 민족의 가장 어려운 시기였던 1930년 전후 짧은 기간의 사역을 감당하였지만 많은 영적 파장과 통찰을 주고 있는 이용도 목사의 설교 사역을 역사적으로 고찰하면서 재평가하고 오늘의 시대에서 설교 사역을 감당하는데 통찰과 지혜를 얻는데 그 목적이 있다.
