The purpose of this paper is to review the Japanese recognition on Dokdo through Japanese old document of Edo-Meiji era and examine if Japanese recognized Dokdo as her territory. Japanese recognition on Dokdo was 200 years later than Korea in historic materials and Japanese recognition was mentioned as a seaway mile-stone to reach Ulleungdo The Japanese recognition on Dokdo boundary was ① Insyushichogaki (隱州洲視聽合記) described Japanese north-west territory border limits to Oki island, which explain the fact Matsushima=Dokdo was out of Japanese border and recognized Dokdo as Choseon(Korea) territory. ② The ‘7 articles in answer’ in Ulleungdo Jaenggye(鬱陵島爭界) document which established by Dottori provincial government and answered to Edo Bahuku in December 24, 1695 as a turning point described ‘Takeshuma=Ulleungdo and Matsushima=Dokdo do not belong to Dottori-han government’, ③ Chosenkoku-kosaishimatsu-naitansyo(朝鮮國交際始末內探書) (Inspection report for the establishment of diplomatic relation with Choseon) ordered to examine how ‘Takeshuma=Ulleungdo and Matsushima=Dokdo annexed to Choseon’, ④ ‘Dajyokan-shirei(太政官指令)’(Order of Prime Minister) dated on March 29, 1877 manifested and declared ‘Takeshuma=Ulleungdo and one island =Matsushima=Dokdo do not have any relation with Japan and keep in mind’, which obviously revealed no Japanese territory in official old document of Japanese government. So, Dokdo belong to Korea in reality in the Japanese old documents.

본 연구의 목적은 일본 고문서를 통해 에도･메이지 시대 일본의 독도 인식이 과연 어떠하였으며 그들은 독도를 자신들의 판도로 간주하였는가를 검토하는 것이다. 역사 사료 속에서 일본의 독도 인지는 한국에 비해 200년 이상 이후의 일이고 그것도 울릉도 도해를 하기 위한 표식(목표물)으로 이용하는 정도였다. 독도의 판도를 생각하는 그들의 인식은 ①『은주시청합기』에서 일본의 서북한계를 오키섬으로 한정하고 있는 점, 다시 말해 독도(송도)를 일본의 판도외 즉 조선의 영역으로 인식하고 있었던 사실, ②｢울릉도쟁계｣의 최대 전환점이 되는 1695년 12월 24일 에도 막부의 조회에 대한 돗토리번의 ｢7개조답변서｣에서 ‘죽도(울릉도)와 송도(독도)는 돗토리번에 속하는 섬이 아니다’고 명언한 사실, ③｢조선국교제시말내탐서｣에서 ‘죽도(울릉도)와 송도(독도)가 조선국 부속이 되어있는 시말’을 조사하여 보고하게 한 점, ④1877년 3월 29일 발령한 ｢태정관지령｣에서 ‘죽도(울릉도)외일도(독도)는 일본과 관계없므로 명심할 것’이라고 천명한 점 등 일본의 관찬기록 그 어디에도 독도를 일본의 판도 밖으로 보고 있다. 즉 조선의 판도로 보고 있는 것이다.
