The Postwar life of war widow and Demobilized soldier got wores in the unrest circumstance. Jiyoko war widow left her sun at the orphan and worked as employee in the restaurant. But she was fired from the restaurant because of wrong awareness about the widow. Demobilized soldier Sukimotomanaged to get the work but thauht suicide attempt for the anxiety that his company could close. Sukimoto and Kenji, his brother loved women such as war widows. Kenji wanted to get married to Yuriko a war widow. but they separated because his parents opposed the marriage. Sukimoto also wanted to get married to Jiyoko, so went home for permission to get merried but he didn’t. Kenji was wandering after leaving her. but Sukimoto went Hatsusima with Jiyoko and confirmed their love seeing the sea. Like this, it was expressed in the book that the brother felt frustated and overcomed about the conventionality through their love. Jiyoko also recognized that she got free herself from restrains and then had to decided to get merrid to Sukimoto by herself. The writer, Humiko expressed her desire through the book that was the problem of war widow and Demobilized soldier was solved by human nature, not a goverment policy.

전후, 일본의 불안한 환경에서 전쟁미망인과 복원병의 생활은 더욱 극심해질 수밖에 없었다. 전쟁미망인 지요코는 아들 유이치를 보육원에 맡기고 요릿집 종업원으로 일을 시작하지만, 미망인에 대한 나쁜 인식 때문에 쫓겨난다. 복원병 스기모토 역시 가까스로 직장을 구했지만, 그 회사가 언제 문을 닫을지 모르는 불안감에 자살을 생각하기도 한다. 스기모토와 동생 겐지가 사랑하는 여인들은 전쟁미망인이다. 먼저 겐지가 전쟁미망인 유리코와 결혼하려고 했지만 부모님의 반대로 헤어진다. 불안해진 스기모토는 지요코와의 결혼을 위해 직접 시골로 가지만 부모님의 동의를 얻지 못한다. 겐지는 유리코가 떠나고 난 후 마음을 잡지 못하고 하쓰시마로 떠난다. 그러나 스기모토는 지요코와 함께 하쓰시마로 가 바다를 보며 서로의 사랑을 확인한다. 이 두 형제와 전쟁미망인의 사랑을 모델로, 사회 인습에 좌절하는 모습과 용기 있게 극복해 나가는 모습을 그리고 있다. 지요코 역시 차츰 인습의 굴레에서 벗어나 스기모토와의 결혼을 자신의 의지에 의해 결정해야 한다는 것을 인지한다.이렇게 후미코는 그 시대가 안고 있는 전쟁미망인과 복원병 문제가 정부시책보다는 인간 본연의 욕구에 의해 해결되기를 바라는 염원을 이 작품을 통해 독자들에게 전달하고 있다.
