This study aims to explore whether or how we can realize Wonhyo’s thought of ‘Hwajaeng’ and discuss what the implications of realizing the theory are. First, the key concepts and ideas of Wonhyo were reviewed, and the major logics of ‘Hwajaeng’ were presented. And, several examples which have applied or suggested to apply the thought to actual activities were introduced and reviewed. Then, the implications of realizing ‘Hwajaeng’ were discussed in the perspective of two new emerging theories, actor network theory and argumentation theory of new rhetorics. Discussions were based on the previous studies and second data relevant to this paper. The implications found and discussed here are that ‘Hwajaeng’ could prevent a certain theory or opinion from falling into dogma and a person from clinging to his opinion, and make a person live for enlightenment and awakening of consciousness, and enable a person to be aware of the importance of practicing to back up the activities of writing, studying, and so on.

이 연구는 원효 화쟁회통의 논리를 우리 사회의 여러 갈등 국면에 적용할 수 있는지, 적용 가능하다면 어떤 시도를 해 볼 수 있는지, 그리고 그 의의는 무엇인지를 논의해 본 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 원효 화쟁 사상의 핵심 내용을 정리하고, 화쟁의 논리나 근거를 찾아 본 다 음, 몇 가지 화쟁 사상의 적용사례를 살펴보았다. 이어서 최근에 부각되고 있는 이론들 중에 화쟁과 연관이 있을 법한 행위자 연결망 이론과 신수사학의 논증이론을 화쟁 사상과 만날 가 능성이 있는 것으로 보고 접맥을 시도해 보았다. 논의는 주로 관련 선행 연구와 2차 문헌 자 료를 활용하였다. 화쟁 사상 적용의 현실적 의의는, 어떤 사상이나 의견이 독단에 빠지는 것 을 막아주고, 주장을 펴는 사람이 어디에 집착하지도 않게 하며, 의식의 각성과 깨달음의 삶 을 지향하게 하고, 글쓰기, 학문하기가 결국은 실천으로 이어져야 함을 일깨워주는 데 있다고 정리했다.
