Hwaeomlonjeolyo is a book that summarizes the forty volumes of Li Tong-xuan’s (Tang Dynasty, 635-730) Shinhwaeomgyeonglon into three volumes by Jinul (Goryeo, 1158-1210). A copy of this book was discovered at the Kanazawa Bunko Museum in Yokohama, Japan in 1934 and it was spread widely by Kim Ji-gyeon in 1968. It has been fifty years since then. Studies on the contents of this book were limited to partial introductions. Basic literary information and letter decoding of the copy has not yet been made. It can be said that critical studies on what the logical structure of the Seon Gyo Congruence Theory discovered by Jinul in Li Tong-xuan are still in its infancy. Future projects necessary are the production of a photoprint edition and annotated edition, translation into Korean, comparison of the points of Shinhwaeomgyeonglon and Hwaeomlonjeolyo, a comprehensive interpretation of the Seon Gyo Congruence Theory in the books of Jinul, and examination of the mode of unfolding Li Tong-xuan’s hwaeom ideas in East Asian Buddhist history.

『화엄론절요』는 지눌(고려, 1158-1210)이 이통현(당, 635-730)의 『신화엄경론』 40권을 3권으로 요약한 책이다. 이 책은 1934년 일본 金澤文庫에서 寫本의 형태로발견되었고, 1968년 김지견에 의해 널리 유포되었다. 이후 50여년이 지났지만, 이 책의내용에 대한 연구는 부분적으로 소개되는 정도에 그치고 있고, 아직도 사본의 기초적인문헌정보나 글자판독조차 제대로 이루어지지 못한 상태이다. 지눌이 이통현에게서 발견한 禪敎一致의 논리구조가 구체적으로 무엇인지에 대한 사상적 연구는 아직 시작단계에머물러 있다고 할 수 있다. 향후 요청되는 과제로는 영인본과 교주본 제작, 한글 번역, 『신화엄경론』과 『화엄론절요』의 논지 비교, 지눌의 전체 저서들 속에서 선교일치 논리에 대한 종합적 해석, 동아시아불교사상사에서 이통현 화엄사상의 전개 양상 고찰 등을들 수 있다.
