This paper demonstrates systematic arrangement and application plan of historical manuscripts possessed by the Advanced Center for Korean Studies. Since 2001, the Advanced Center for Korean Studies has carried forward to contribute the creative succession of our traditional culture by conducting comprehensive and systematic researches, conservation, collection and studies on Korean study materials owned by individuals which were on the brink of disappearing due to damage or theft. As a result, the center possesses over 440,000 valuable Korean study materials which makes the nation’s largest institute for possessing Korean study materials. In October 2015, 718 titles and 64,226 pieces of Confucian Printing Woodblocks in Korea, possessed by the Advanced Center for Korean Studies, was registered to the list of UNESCO Memory of the World for its world significance and distinctive values. However, the current condition of arrangement for Korean study materials can be very insignificant as materials were collected in very shorttime but the manpower and budget had not been sufficient. Since 1980s, several institutes started to collect the historical manuscripts as well as to train professional manpower, but the manpower does not satisfy attentions from Korean study institutes. The issue for the shortage of manpower can be primary concerns for all institutes for Korean study materials. In this paper, I would like to suggest four proposals for systematic arrangement and application of historical manuscripts. Firstly, training internal manpower as well as securing applicable external manpower can be necessary. Secondly, establishing conservation laboratory is urgently required for the permanent conservation of Korean study materials. The establishment of conservation laboratory shall attract private sectors whose materials are being damaged consistently, thus it prevents the extinction of traditional heritage while fostering the atmosphere for conserving Korean study materials. Thirdly, establishing organic networks between related institutes and active application of Data Management Program, the data search system of the Advanced Center for Korean Studies, are required. Lastly, contemporary reinterpretation of traditional materials can be broadly suggested. The reinterpretation of cultural heritage draws attentions from various generations, as well as draws domestic and international interests of Korean traditional heritage.

본고에서는 한국국학진흥원 소장 고문서의 체계적 정리와 활용방안을 다루었다. 한국국학진흥원은 2001년부터 민간 소장의 전통문화유산에 대한 체계적인 조사와 수집 활동을 통해 훼손 및 멸실 위기에 처해있는 국학자료가 미래세대로 안전하게 전승할 수있도록 하는 역할을 담당하고 있다. 현재는 44만 점 가까운 자료를 소장한 국내 최다국학자료 수장기관이다. 조사·수집과 함께 기탁 자료의 가치 발굴에도 힘을 쏟아 금년10월에는 한국국학진흥원 소장 유교책판 718종 64,226장이 세계기록문화유산에 등재되는 쾌거를 이루기도 하였다. 그러나 단시일의 수집 활동에 비해 이들 자료를 정리할 수 있는 인력과 예산이 여의치않아 현재 국학자료의 정리 상황은 극히 미미한 수준이다. 1980년대 이후로 몇몇 기관에서 고문서 수집과 함께 전문 인력 양성에 관심을 기울이고 있지만 관심 대비 인력풀은많이 부족하다. 이는 국학자료 소장기관이 공통적으로 갖고 있는 고민이기도 하다. 필자는 고문서의 체계적 정리 및 활용을 위해 네 가지 제언을 하고자 한다. 첫째, 내부 인력 양성에 힘을 쏟는 것은 물론이고 외부의 활용 가능한 인력풀을 충분히 확보하자는 것이다. 고문서 정리를 위해서는 고문서 해독 능력과 초서 해독 능력, 문서를 감정할 수 있는 능력을 고루 겸비해야 하는데 단시일에 내부의 인력을 양성하여 실무에 투입시키기란 쉽지 않다. 이를 위해 여러 기관에서 양성되고 훈련된 인력풀을 확보하여 적극활용하는 것도 한 방법이라고 생각한다. 둘째, 한국국학진흥원에서는 자료의 보존 관리를 위해 매년 훈증 소독을 하고 있지만, 이것만으로는 서로 다른 상태의 자료들을 정확하게 파악하여 제대로 보존하기란 쉽지않다. 소장 국학자료에 대한 정확한 상태조사는 물론이고, 훼손된 자료에 대한 보존처리가 함께 진행될 때 자료의 영구적 보존이 가능하므로 이를 위한 보존처리실 구축이 시급히 요구된다. 이는 아직까지 민간에 보관되어 훼손이 진행되고 있는 자료들의 유입을가져올 것이며 전통문화유산의 멸실을 최소화할 수 있는 분위기를 조성할 것으로 보인다. 셋째, 국학진흥원의 자료검색시스템인 소장자료관리시스템의 적극적인 활용과 함께유관 기관과의 유기적 관계망을 구축하는 것이다. 한국학 관련 연구기관에서는 수년 전부터 기초자료의 DB구축사업 등을 통해 기관 소장 자료들을 상당 부분 데이터베이스화하여 제공하고 있다. 이들 자료를 통합적으로 이용할 수 있는 방안을 모색한다면 고서, 고문서 등 다양한 자료들을 활용한 입체적 연구가 활발해질 것이고 이는 자료 정리 인력의 필요성이 부각될 수 있는 계기가 될 것이다. 넷째, 전통자료에 대한 적극적인 현대적 재해석 노력을 해야 한다는 것이다. 우리의문화유산에 대한 현대적 재해석 노력은 세대간의 공감을 이끌어낼 수 있으며 역사와스토리를 담고 있는 우리의 우수한 전통문화유산에 대한 국내외의 관심을 환기시킬 수있을 것이다.
