This writing will deal with thief stories on [Ijaenango], a diary by Hwang Yoon Seok who was born in Heungdeok of Chollanamdo in the middle and the late 18th century, passed examination and worked as low-ranking government official. On [Ijaenango], Hwang Yoon Seok introduced 10 stories of thief three times in the 1770s and was a person who wrote a thief story most in the 18th century. The stories of thief which Hwang Yoon Seok wrote three times are a story related to three groups of thief who he considered to be different. The first group is a story of thief who owned a den of robbers. It refers to the thief head, Kim Dan, Mt. Jiri thief among historically famous groups of thief such as Im Kkeokjeong or Baek Ryong. The secondly introduced group of thief is whose head is a talented nobleman, that is an intellect. He classified them as ‘Nobleman thief’. The noblemen had an excellent personality and were well-aware of theories. The third one is about ‘Mt. Jiri thief’ living in Mt Jiri locating southern part of Korea. They had a considerable power around Mt. Jiri and a potential to raise a rebellion. Since the stories of thief that Hwang Yoon Seok introduced shows his unique features such as classification on the groups of thief or a connection with reality, it is necessary to research them in detail.

이글은 18세기 중후반 전라도 흥덕 출신으로 소과에 급제하여 하급 관료 생활을 한 이재 황윤석이 쓴 일기 󰡔이재난고󰡕 속에 들어있는 도적 이야기 즉 군도담을 다룬 것이다. 황윤석은 󰡔이재난고󰡕 속에서 1770년대 총 세 차례에 걸쳐 군도담 10편 정도를 소개하고 있다. 18세기 당시 군도담을 가장 많이 기록하고 있는 사람이다. 황윤석의 세 차례에 걸친 군도담 기록은 그의 의식 속에서 서로 다른 것으로 인식되던 세 가지 군도에 대한 이야기이다. 맨처음 소개하고 있는 군도들은 산채를 가질 정도의 도적집단 이야기이므로 “산채도적”이라 명명하였다. 임꺽정, 백룡 같은 역사상 유명한 군도에서 지리산 도적 우두머리 김단에 대한 이야기가 그것이다. 두 번째로 소개하고 있는 군도들은 우두머리가 능력이 뛰어난 양반 즉 지식인인 경우이다. 여기에서는 “양반도적”이라고 분류했다. 이 양반들은 지식이나 인격이나 이론 면에서 당대 최고에 속한다. 세 번째는 한반도 남쪽 지리산에 웅거한 “지리산 도적”에 대한 이야기이다. 이들은 지리산 주변에 상당한 세력을 가지고 있으며 나중에 반란으로 이어질 가능성이 농후한 도적이다. 황윤석이 소개하고 있는 군도담은 군도에 대한 분류라든가 현실과의 매개 등에 있어 그만의 독특한 태도가 엿보여 앞으로 심도있는 연구가 필요하다.
