This research will historically approach the background and emergence of their activities as an unprecedented case of ‘Doryuseung(道流僧)’ who was blind, Daoshi, and a monk. Doryuseung was like a similar-monk who trained in the Taoist technic, took the tonsure, wore a monk’s robe and had a Buddhist name. Doryuseung worked as odd job-officers in Sogyuksō Because of they are handicapped and taken care by the welfare policy of the government. The royal family sometimes kept them close for their personal needs, and the government also needed them for Rain rites or other official ceremonies to prevent each kind of disaster. After the abolition of Sogyuksō, Doryuseung worked as a blind shaman(Mugyuk) in the non-official sector, doing various scripture chanting, magic talismans, shamanistic rituals. They chant the various scriptures including Taoism, Shamanism, and some kinds of Esoteric Buddhism which has a function of invoking blessings, defeat disasters and exorcisms. And they have a tendency of large appropriation and chant the Buddhist uncanonical scriptures like a ‘Chunsugyong’ or ‘Chunjipalyangshinjugyong’ as a shamanistic one. It could be assumed that Doryuseung’s activities in the private sector raising a new context of shamanistic appropriation of the Buddhist sutra in the mid-late Chosôn.

본 논문에서는 맹인으로서 도사이자, 승려였던 도류승(道流僧)이라는 특이한 현 상이 나타난 배경과 활동 내용을 고찰하고자 한다. 도류승은 맹인으로서 도류(道流)의 업을 익힌 사람이 삭발하고 승복을 걸치고, 법명까지 가지고 있었던 유사승려라고 할 수 있는 존재였다. 도류승들은 국가에서 보살펴야 할 장애인이었기 때문에 복지정책 차원에서의 시 혜까지 더해져 국가기관인 소격서에서 잡직 관원으로 일할 수 있었다. 왕실에서는 간혹 개인적인 필요에 의해 도류승을 가까이 하기도 했으며, 국가 차원에서도 각종 기우의식이나 전염병 소재를 위한 의식 등에 이들을 필요로 하고 있 었다. 소격서 폐지 이후에 도류승들은 민간에서 맹인무격으로 활동하면서 독경과 각종 부적을 이용한 주술과 의식들을 행하게 된다. 독경의 대상이 되는 경전들 역시 도경(道經)과 무경(巫經), 기복과 양재, 축사의 기능이 강한 밀교류 경전까지 두루 포섭하게 되는 것을 볼 수 있다. 이들 판수 내지 경무들이 외는 경 중에는 『천수경』과 『천지팔양신주경』과 같은 불교의 위경을 무경처럼 전용하는 경우도 많음을 보게 된다. 이러한 전후 상황으로 미루어 도류승들이 조선시대 중후기에 민간 영역에서 활 동하게 되면서 불경을 무경으로 전용하는 일이 더욱 활기를 얻었으리라는 추정도 가능하리라 생각된다.
