The aim of this article is to compare ancient Pyrrhonism with Madhyamaka Buddhism. It is well known that Pyrrhonism bears a striking similarity to Madhyamaka. By demonstrating that all concepts are related and dependent on each other, Sextus Empiricus and Nāgārjuna attempt to liberate from all kinds of dogmatic anxiety. Yet they do not establish their own theories. Here I try to clarify the sceptical forms of argument which they employ in common to destroy dogmatic views. While analysing the key texts of Pyrrhonist and Madhyamaka, namely Sextus Empiricus’ Outlines of Pyrrhonism and Nāgārjuna’s The Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle way, I reach the conclusion that they shared the same dialectic to attack all sorts of dualistic, substantial ways of thinking. Surprisingly enough, they have the almost same theoretical forms and contents which are hard to find in the Eastern and Western philosophy. Meanwhile, it is noticeable that in a later period Madhyamaka Buddhism went through the developmental process, but Pyrrhonism did not so. In the West Pyrrhonism has always been treated as a philosophical enemy to be overcome necessarily. This fact suggests that it is difficult for the modern western philosophers to accept the teachings of Madhyamaka Buddhism positively.

이 글의 목표는 피론주의와 불교의 중관학을 비교하는 것 이다. 피론주의와 중관학의 유사성은 잘 알려져 있는 사실이다. 이 두 철학 사조는 모든 개념이 서로 연결되어 있고 의존하고 있다는 것을 증명하였고, 이것을 통해 온갖 사견(邪見)에서의 해방을 시도하였다. 그러면서도 이들은 자신들의 이론을 정립하지 않았다. 나는 여기서 어 떤 논증에 의거하여 양자가 독단적인 견해들을 파괴하는 데서 공동 전선을 형성하는지를 구체적으로 밝혔다. 섹스투스 엠피리쿠스의 저작 과 용수의 주요 저작을 분석해보면, 특히 아이네시데모스와 아그리파, 용수의 논증에 주목해 보면, 피론주의와 중관학은 실체론적이고 이원 론적인 온갖 사유방식을 공격하는 데 있어 동일한 변증법을 동원하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 양자는 동서양 철학에서 거의 유래를 찾기 보기 힘들 정도로 놀랄 만큼 유사하거나 동일한 이론적 형식과 내용을 지 니고 있다. 그럼에도 동양에서 용수 이후 중관학이 발전적 과정을 거 쳐 갔다면, 서양에서 피론주의는 언제나 철학의 적으로 취급되었다. 이런 사실은 최소한 서양 근대 철학에서 중관학이 적극적으로 수용되 기 어려웠다는 것을 시사한다.
