Although school athletic club coaches have played critical roles on the development of korean elite sport, their lives have been overlooked in the research context. So the purpose of this study was to explore the lives of coaches deeply by using a qualitative research method. Five coaches participated in this study. Data were collected by in-depth interview, participatory observation, and documents collection. And then data were analyzed by using text analysis. Based on the result of this study, the lives of elementary school athletic club coaches as a careerman were categorized as followings. First, participants commonly asserted that being a school athletic club coach was the best choice at the final stage of their athlete life. After being a coach, they lived tough lives by swallowing the overload of works. Second, participants recognized the principal and club managing teacher as superior authorities. So they felt fatigues on their lives to ingratiate themselves with principal and athletic club managing teacher. Third, participants had difficulties not only in coaching students who are not matured. But also they experienced hardness in finding athletes for sustaining the team. In addition, troubles has arisen between coaches and parents who contribute a financial support to the athletic club. Finally participants told the difficulties that they felt as a careerman were a low payment and uncertainty of their occupational status.

이 연구는 그동안 우리나라 엘리트 체육발전에 중추적인 역할을 담당해왔음에도 불구하고 연구 맥락에서 소외되어왔던 학교 운동부 코치에 주목하고, 질적 연구 방법을 통해 그들의 직업적 삶을 심층적으로 탐색하는 데 연구의 목적이 있다. 초등학교 운동부 코치 중 연구참여자로 선정된 5명으로부터 심층면담, 참여관찰 및 관련 문서등의 자료를 수집하였고 수집된 자료는 전사 과정을 거쳐 텍스트 자료로 변환되었으며, 변환된 자료는 의미의 범주화, 개념화 등의 분석 과정을 거쳐 문서화 되었다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학교 운동부 코치로서의 입문은 엘리트 선수로서의 한계에 도달한 시점에서 선택할 수 있는 최상의 선택이었으며, 코치로서의 일상은 규정된 근무량 이상의 근로를 감당해야 하는 고단한 삶이었다. 둘째, 업무 관계에 있어서 학교 운동부 코치들은 학교운동부의 존폐에 상당한 영향력을 끼치는 학교장과 실질적 업무를 담당하는 감독 교사의 비위 맞추기에 많이 피곤해 하고 있었다. 셋째, 학교 운동부 코치들은 코칭 상황에서 미성숙한 학생선수들의 지도와 운동부의 안정적운영을 위한 선수 발굴에 많은 어려움을 겪고 있었다. 넷째, 학교 운동부 코치들은 계약직의 낮은 보수에 힘들어하고 있었으며, 지속적인 신분 보장을 위한 경기 실적에 대한 압박감을 떠안고 있었다. 그리고 학교 운동부 운영에 재정적 기여를 하는 학부모들과의 관계에서도 갈등을 겪고 있었다.
