People begin to possess collective identities as activists in the process of participating in civil movements, but they share generational consciousness with contemporaries. Recently, younger generations are paying more increasing attention to individual-themselves than community and to material values than non-material ones. These orientations of ordinary generations would affect the generations of civil movement activists. This study analyzes whether there are any generational differences in activists’ perspectives through in-depth interviews of Cheongju activists. Especially, this study focuses on the perspective on materialism and the commitment to civil movements. As a result, all generations of civil movement activists had non-materialism in contrast to the non-activist generations that chase after money generally. It does not seem that materialism has permeated civil movements so much. However, the commitment to civil movements was becoming considerably weak. It has been confirmed that ‘individualism’ that is the part of consciousness of the younger generation has influenced the degree of the commitment as well. In order to raise the commitment of younger generation, communities of civil movements should promote inter-generational communications and mutual recognition and encouragement from fellow activists.

시민운동 활동가들은 시민운동에 참여하면서 활동가로서의 집합정체성을 획득하지만 동년배들과 공유하는 세대의식도 갖는다. 최근 젊은 세대일수록 집단보다 개인에대한 관심이 증가하고 물질추구적 성향도 강화되고 있다는 점을 고려할 때 이러한 세대의식은 시민운동 활동가들에게도 영향을 미칠 수 있을 것이다. 이에 본 연구는 청주지역 활동가들에 대한 심층면접을 통해 시민운동단체 활동가들의 가치관이 세대별로어떠한 차이가 나타나는지 비교분석해 보았다. 특히 시민운동 정체성과 세대의식 사이에 충돌이 나타날 수 있다고 판단되는 물질/돈에 대한 관점과 시민운동에 대한 헌신성의 정도를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 연구결과 사회운동 활동가들은 세대를 막론하고 ‘탈물질적 가치관’을 지니고 있었다. 물질추구적 가치관의 시민운동 속으로의 침투는 우려할 정도로 크지 않은 듯 보인다. 반면 시민운동에 대한 헌신성에서는 젊은 세대 활동가로 올수록 그 정도가 상당히 약화되고 있었다. 젊은 세대로 올수록 집단보다 개인에 대한 관심이 증가하는 일반세대의식이 시민운동 내에도 관철되고 있으며 그것은 젊은 세대 활동가들 사이에서 시민운동에대한 헌신성의 약화로 나타나고 있는 것이다. 젊은 세대 활동가들의 시민운동에 대한헌신성을 끌어올리기 위해서는 시민운동 공동체 내부의 세대간 소통과 상호인정 및 격려하는 문화를 활성성화함으로써 활동가 정체성을 강화할 필요가 있을 것이다.
