Prison inmates experience stress during incarceration. This study tried to analyze the effects of family-related factors on the inmates’adaptation to incarcerated environments, based on the coping model which assumes that adaptation is closely related to the availability of coping mechanisms. Specifically, the paper collect and studies the relationship of stress levels of the inmates, family function, and family visitation on the mediation effect of family visitations. For this study, 394 married inmates were surveyed from 44 correctional facilities. The surveys were then analyzed with a Hierarchical Regression Analysis and Correlation Analysis. Main findings are as followed. First, among the inmates’sex, age, marital status, sentence, and length of incarceration, only the inmates’ age and sentence had an effect on the inmates’ stress levels. Specifically, the younger the age and longer the sentence, the higher the inmates’ stress levels were. Second, family visitations showed to have a mediation effect in the relationship between family functions and the inmates’ stress levels. An inmate’s family function affected the inmate’s stress levels, and family visitations had a mediation effect between the inmate’s stress levels and family functions. Specifically, positive the family functions of the inmate facilitated increased family contact and indirectly reduced the inmate’s stress levels. This proves the applicability of the coping model in the relationship between the stress levels of inmates and family factors. Third, based on the result of the analysis, the paper suggests that stress levels of inmates should be reduced through an environment-based approach by changes stress-inducing factors instead of the current approach where the emphasis is on individual inmates.

수용자들은 교도소의 독특한 환경 속에서 스트레스에 노출되기 쉽다. 이 연구는 수용생활의 적응여부는 교도소 환경에 대처하는데 필요한 자원에 달려있다고 보는 대처모델(coping model)을 이론적 배경으로 하여, 수용자들의 핵심자원인 가족요인들이 수용생활의 부적응을 초래하는 스트레스에 미치는 영향을 밝히는데 목적을 두었다. 구체적으로 수용자스트레스, 가족기능, 가족접견의 영향관계에서 가족접견의 매개효과를 중심으로 분석하였다. 연구를 위해 전국 44개 교정기관에서 설문조사를 통해 기혼수용자 394명으로부터 자료를 수집하였다. 수집된 자료는 위계적 회귀분석 및 상관관계분석을 통해 분석하였으며 주요 발견사항은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 수용자의 성별, 연령, 법률혼 여부, 형기, 복역기간 중에서 연령과 형기만이 수용자스트레스에 대한 영향력이 유의하였다. 구체적으로 수용자의 연령이 적을수록, 형량이 긴 수용자일수록 스트레스가 더 많았다. 둘째, 가족기능이 수용자 스트레스에 미치는 영향관계에서 가족접견은 부분매개 효과가 있음이 확인되었다. 수용자 가족기능은 수용자의 스트레스에 영향을 미쳤고, 가족접견은 수용자의 가족기능과 스트레스를 매개하는 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 구체적으로 수용자 가족기능이 긍정적일수록 수용자 스트레스를 줄어들게 하는 직접효과가 있는 동시에 수용자의 가족기능이 긍정적일수록 수용자와 가족 간 접촉을 활성화시키는 경로를 거쳐서 수용자 스트레스를 줄이는 간접효과 또한 있었다. 셋째, 분석결과에 근거하여 수용자 스트레스 완화 및 수용생활 적응을 위한 개입은 개별수용자에게 비중을 둔 기존의 접근에서 벗어나, 스트레스를 유발하는 상황적 조건을 변화시킬 수 있는 환경 중심적 접근이 필요함을 제안하였다.
