The Korean writer Lee Tea-jun’s The Raven and the American poet Allan Poe’s “The Raven” not only share the same title, but also interrelate with each other. Although in genre, the former is a novel, while the latter a poem. Allan Poe’s poem “The Raven” not only shapes the images of the characters and takes the narrative structure of a fable, but also presents a reasonable plot and dramatic tension, which makes it possible to compare the two. Lee Tea-jun’s novel absorbs the effecting factors from Allan Poe’s poem from three aspects, which are the death of a beauty, the confrontation with the crow and the Gothic atmosphere. However, Lee Tea-jun’s own aesthetic tendency and the effecting factors of oriental culture behind are different from Allan Poe’s. Both the two works, representatives of aestheticism and romanticism, concern about the anxiety and terror in the face of death. Allan Poe’s poem builds a beautiful world of Gothic duality: sadness and terror, while Lee Tea-jun’s novel centres on oriental fatalism to create a classic and sad art space. Allan Poe’s poem is rich with symbols and images, while Lee Tea-jun’s novel impresses the reader with lingering charm and strong lyricism.

이태준의 <까마귀>와 앨런 포우(Edgar Allan Poe)의 <갈가마귀(The Raven)>는 영향관계를 내재한 동명 작품이다. <갈가마귀>는 寓言이야기의 강술(講述)방식을 취한 서사시로서 희극적 구조의 내적 힘이 보유되어 있어 소설과의 비교가 가능하다. 이태준은 ‘미인의 죽음’, ‘까마귀와의 대결’, ‘고딕식의 공포적 분위기 조성’의 세 가지에서 앨런 포우로부터 소설적화소를 계발받았다고 할 수 있으나 작가 개체의 특성과 그 배후의 동양문화적인 요소의 영향때문에 앨런 포우의 그것과 완전히 같을 수 없었다. 두 작품은 죽음에 대한 불안과 공포의문제를 다루었고 모두 유미적 경향을 보여주고 있지만 앨런 포우의 시는 슬픔과 공포가 결합된 고딕식의 미의 세계이고 이태준의 작품의 기조는 유장하고 고풍적이며 애상적이다. 앨런포우의 시는 풍부한 상징과 이미지의 세계이고 이태준의 작품은 체념적(諦念的)인 운명론이바탕이 되었다.
