A good novel is arranged and combined with factors in accordance with the principle of mutual compatibility(Causality, Economical property, Inevitability). It will get aesthetic effects the characteristics of parts bring inherent power out in the chapters and conflicts and develop into an external form. This manuscript has a research purposes to consider the process of signifying(a creation technique) on complex devices with a novella “Eel Stew” written by Ji-Ye Gwon and invokes psychology and psychoanalysis theory in accordance with the analysis of formalism·structuralism and desire·impulse. “Eel Stew” is a story about a woman who hopes to escape from her cracked life with her husband repeatedly comes back from a situation staying with a man and describes internal conflict she cannot settle on both her husband and the man. The author reveals the precarious relationship and deficiency with her husband and the amplification of desire with tension through the flow of a series of illogical consciousness and does mosaic the protagonist's internal aspect. The superficial structure is a complex composition changing randomly time and space with free association, internal dialogue, the interchange and superposition between memory and retrospect. The structure suggests the deteriorated situation as a different recognition and has the episode of symbol and metaphor, developing a series of anecdote and illustration loop and a foreshadowing form of illustration. In-depth meaning structure can explain the sense of anxiety, the desire of escape and hedonic desire involving pain and develop a passion for love and a will for existence through the ambivalent mentality of life and death instincts inflaming tensions. Even though her anxiety from failure of love and a sense of guilt leads to despair, deprivation and a suicide attempt remaining trauma and showing destruction and aggression, life instinct hidden behind it recreates a craving for survival and propagation being projected on lefthand suicide, baby bugs' vitality, heartbreaking struggle. It shows the world of unconsciousness where death and life instincts confront fiercely each other such as a huge iceberg existing underneath consciousness. Eventually, her repetitive life resisting routine with returning from her leaving is both a trapped world symbolizing death and a strong will for existence. The protagonist's complicated and subtle mindset itself is a important material in “Eel Stew”, the past seemed irregular is composed by demonstrating the technical competence showing her inner aspect and spirit, conflict and desire and so on in three dimensions up to invisible point such as a Cubist Picasso's painting and has an insight into her life living without overcoming behavior problems, causes and a sense of anxiety living as if floating around.

본고는 중편소설 「뱀장어 스튜」의 서사구조를 분석함으로써 작가가 의도한 구성 방법과 의미를 고찰하는 데 연구 목적이 있으며 구조주의 분석과 심리학 이론을 원용하였다. 권지예의 「뱀장어 스튜」는 남편과의 균열적 삶에서 벗어나고 싶어 하는 여자가 반복적으로 집을 나가 남자와 머물다 돌아오는 이야기로 두 남자한테 안착할수 없는 내적 갈등을 그리고 있다. 작가는 비논리적으로 연속되는 의식의 흐름을 통하여 남편과의 위태로운 관계, 욕망의 증폭을 긴장감 있게 드러내며 주인공의 내면을 모자이크해 나간다. 표층적 구조는 연상과 독백, 기억과 회상의 교차로 시간과 공간이 수시로 변조되는 복합 구성인데 인물의 상황이 남다른 인식으로 제시되고 상징과 은유의 에피소드, 일화, 기억으로 진행되는 연쇄고리식, 삽화식의 복선적(複線的) 형태를 이룬다. 심층적 의미 구조는 불안 의식과 탈주 욕망, 고통을 수반한 쾌락적 욕망을 바탕으로 사랑과 실존 의지를 생명과 죽음의 양가 심리를 통해 구체화한다. 여자의 불안 의식은 좌절과 박탈감으로 이어져 정신적 외상으로 남고 자해, 남편에 대한 살의, 해충을 죽이는 공격성으로 나타난다. 한편 생명 본능은 왼손 자살, 새끼벌레들의 생명력, 닭의 처절한 몸부림에 투영되어 생존과 번식에 대한 열망으로 재현된다. 작가는 상반된 감정의 충돌을 통해 죽음과 생명 본능이 격렬 하게 대치하는 무의식의 세계를 보여주고 있다. 결국 가출 후 돌아와 일상을 견디는 여자의 삶은 죽음을 상징하는 갇힌 세계이면서 실존에 대한 강렬한 의지로 해명된다.
