The Black Paintings are fourteen oil murals by Goya made between 1819 and 1823 in the “House of the Deaf Man.” They were transferred to canvas by Cubells between 1874 and 1878. In 1881 they were donated by their owner, Baron d’Erlanger, to the Prado Museum, where they have been exhibited since 1889. The paintings have been described as enigmatic or diabolic, and regarded difficult to interpret. I made the analysis that themes such as witches, devils, superstition, inquisition, etc.have been considered as anti theses of religion and enlightenment, and linked, directly or indirectly, to reality in his works of the late 1790’s, but in the Black Paintings represented the artist’s psychological state, which resulted from Caprichos; his conflicts between his old age and his ‘partner’ Leocadia’s youth, his angst over death, political terror, etc. These murals functioned as a healer for their producer, which is one of the dominant elements of modern art.
