The paper's first aim is to introduce to the Korean academic the unpublished handwritten English translation "Heung Boo Jun" located in James Scarth Gale Papers, a collection of the Thomas Fischer Rare Book Library at the University of Toronto in Canada and its typed version by a writer. The second aim is to confirm its source text as "the 20-sheet Heungboo Jun published in Seoul." The third aim is to investigate Gale's translation practices based on the comparison of the source text and its translation version. Gale's translations were on the whole literal translation. Gale, however, omitted the Nolboo' s 9th gourd scene by half in order to adjust each episode's volume and to maintain dramatic tension. It is supposed that Gale tried to avoid direct mention of religion taboos and physiological and sexual expressions. The change of meaning through translation were caused by a few different transcriptions of the Gale's Korean version from the source text. Considering Gale's translation examples through the Chinese character words, proverbs, a monetary unit etc in the source text, his "Heung Boo Jun" can be evaluated as 'more or less complete' version and placed along with his other typed versions like "Sim Chung" and "The Turtle and the Rabbit."

본고의 목적은 『게일 유고』 소재 미간행 육필 <흥부전 영역본>의 원문과 그에 대한 우리의 재구본을 학계에 소개하는 것이다. 육필 <흥부전 영역본>에 대한 우리의 재구본을 토대로 번역저본을 확증하고, 저본대비를 통해 그 번역양상 및 번역용례를 면밀히 고찰했다. 이러한 과정을 거쳐 이 유고 원고의 의미와 가치를 찾고자 했다. 먼저, <경판 20장본 흥부전>, <경판 25장본 흥부전>, 『게일 유고』소재 흥부전 한글필사본과의 대비검토를 통해, 게일의 육필 영역본의 번역저본을 <경판 20장본 흥부전>으로 확증하였다. 근대 초기 알렌, 모리스 쿠랑의 <흥부전> 번역과 대비를 해보면, 게일의 <흥부전 영역본>은 전반적으로 원전에 대한 충실한 직역을 지향하고 있다. 그럼에도 게일은 서사 전개의 긴장을 유지하기 위해 단락을 누락했고 종교적 이유로 혹은 생리적 현상과 성과 관련된 직설적 표현을 배제하고자 어휘를 누락하기도 했다. 오역이나 변용을 일으키는 번역도 있었는데 이는 <경판 20장본 흥부전>을 옮긴 한글필사본의 오기로 인해 발생한 경우가 많았다. 게일 <흥부전 영역본>의 개별번역용례의 분석을 통해, 게일의 번역 원칙과 양상 그리고 어휘 차원의 문화 번역을 확인할 수 있었다. 게일의 <흥부전 영역본>은 비록 활자화되지 못한 육필 형태의 원고이고 ‘미완성된 번역물’이지만, 이 육필 형태 자체로도 충분히 한국고전번역물로서의 가치가 있음을 확인하였다.
