The bilateral meeting between Unification Church Founder Moon Sun-myung and Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev paved the way for the end of the Cold War and marked the watershed shift towards detente and eventual end of the Cold War, rather than being a one-time meeting or perfunctory event. Meaningfully, this meeting heralded transition to post-Cold War which was accompanied by establishment of diplomatic ties between South Korea and Russia, collapse of the Soviet Union, end of the Cold War, shift to multi-polar system, etc. Thus, this study was intended to revisit the meaning of the bilateral meeting which was held between the world's two leaders from the perspective of global governance. This meeting between Unification Church Founder Moon Sun-myung and Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev was beyond comprehension or interpretation from the standpoint of the Cold War, considering that both were the world leaders representing two extreme poles of ideology. From the angle of global governance, the interest of both leaders dovetailed as Unification Church Founder Moon Sun-myung, a non-state actor, owned media network and global network necessary for achieving supranational goals of peaceful world and Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev needed the trust and support of international community. This bilateral meeting helped spur visits of Soviet society's leaders and youths to the United States who subsequently gained the first-hand experience with democracy in the United States while engaging themselves in interchange with the U.S. leaders. Moreover, this bilateral meeting also played a significant role in inducing those Soviet society's leaders and youths to form the backbone of citizen groups opposing communist coup that occurred in the Soviet Union. In addition, the bilateral meeting between Unification Church Founder Moon Sun-myung and Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev helped inject fresh momentum into stagnant relationship between South Korean and Society Union and made a new turning point in the South Korea-North Korea relationship, thereby setting the tone for peace in Northeast Asia.

문선명 총재와 고르바초프 대통령의 양자회담은 단순한 일회적인 만남이나 보여주기식 행사가 아니라 냉전종식과 탈냉전의 전환기를 여는 회담으로 이후 한․소 수교와 소련붕괴, 냉전종식과 다극체제 전환 등 탈냉전시대로의 변화를 예고하는 중요한 의미를 담고 있었다. 이에 본 연구는 두 세계적 지도자간의 양자회담이 갖는 의미를 글로벌 거버넌스의 개념에서 재조명해보고자 하였다. 문선명 총재와 고르바초프 대통령은 이데올로기적으로 양극단에 서 있던 세계적인 지도자로서 이들의 회담은 냉전적인 시각으로는 이해하거나 해석할 수 없는 만남이었다. 그러나 글로벌 거버넌스의 관점에서 볼 때 이들의 만남은 평화세계 실현이라는 초국가적 목표를 위해 미디어 네트워크와 국제적 네트워크를 갖춘 비국가적 행위자인 문선명 총재와 국제사회의 신뢰와 지원이 필요했던 고르바초프 대통령의 회담으로 분석되었다. 이들의 회담은 이후 소련 사회의 지도자와 청년들이 미국을 방문해 미국 지도자들과 교류하면서 민주주의를 직접 체험하는 교육으로 이어졌으며 이후 소련에서 공산주의 쿠데타가 발생하였을 때 이들이 쿠데타를 반대하는 시민세력의 중심이 되도록 하는데 기여하였다. 또한 문 총재와 고르바초프의 회담은 진전이 없었던 한․소관계와 남북관계에 새로운 계기를 만들어 동북아시아 평화증진의 신호탄이 되었다.
