Once Russian Formalists thought Literature is an act of defamiliarization to give arise a time to think in appreciating it. For intercultural-writers, that definition would be inverted into familiarization of the differences of languages and cultures existing in different countries. The necessary condition to achieve a success is to overcome those differences by sublimating that difficulty in accordance with the new paradigm. I have examined the ways they succeed and failed through two examples of Korean-American writers, Chang-rae Lee and Hak-kyung Cha. Slightly different yet very similarly, we have three other great writers who made success in adapting new culture in harmony with native culture, and above all, to renovate the form of art corresponding to the new paradigm: Henry James, the 19th century American Writer, James Joyce, the 20th century British Writer, and the 20th century Russian-American writer, Vladimir Nabokov. I have briefly shed light on those writers in terms of the artistic spirits and form of art.

이 글은 이창래와 차학경의 작품을 통해 국제 한인 문학의 세계화를 위하여 필요한 점이 무엇인지 살피는 소고이다. 그리고 타국에 살면서 모국의 문화를 세계화 시킨 불멸의 작가들로 미국의 헨리 제임스, 아일랜드의 제임스 조이스, 그리고 러시아계 미국 작가인 블라디미르 나보코프의 작품세계를 조명한다. 이창래와 차학경의 성공과 쇠퇴의 배경을 당대 패러다임의 시작과 끝이라는 시대적 변화 속에서 살펴보았다. 그리고 타국에서 경험하는 삶의 현장성과 모국의 문화적 뿌리를 잘 조화시켜야한다는 필수조건도 드러났다. 모국의 언어와 타국의 언어가 다른 점이 작가로서 가장 극복하기 어려운 부분이다. 두 작가는 바로 그 어려움을 주제로 삼아 성공하였다. 제임스와 조이스는 같은 영어를 사용하였기에 당대의 패러다임을 포착하고 그에 맞는 새로운 기법을 개척하였다. 전자는 리얼리즘문학, 후자는 모더니즘문학의 최고점을 성취한다. 나보코프는 이보다 힘든 경우였다. 러시아어에서 영어로 옮겨야했기 때문이다. 그러기에 그의 작품들은 더 생명이 길다. 포스트모던 패러다임에도 적용되고 최근의 새로운 융복합적 패러다임에도 적용되기 때문이다. 이들을 통해 외로움과 낯설음의 고통은 작가가 되는 밑거름이 되었음을 알 수 있다.
