This study identifies expressive characteristics and the implicative meaning of inflatable fashion beyond traditional methods and functional wear to analyze various types of inflatable wear that have functions and forms varying depending on the situation. The first type of inflatable wear is expressed as a swollen and expanded type such as part of skirt or jacket or dress. The second type has been produced by performance fashion that focuses on immediate variability through technology. The third type of inflatable wear is the usage conversion type of a multi-function concept. It is expressed by a function shifting design that uses a multipurpose concept through a conversion of usage and form. An analysis of inflatable wear types showed the following results. First, inflatable wear is an enlarged concept of fashion different from traditional conventional stereotypes that creates an expanded communication and exchange space to express the garment of wrapping human bodies in liberal and various ways. Second, inflatable wear fashion is expressed as a performance arena moving forward from an experimental fashion show form that shows a distinctive difference before and after air insertion. Third, fashion combined with technology acts as a multi-function that actively introduces mobility and variability in costumes and expands the meaning and concept of fashion. Fashion design is identified as a method to stimulate human emotion and exchange mutual feelings and as a multi-purpose device that allows the protection and concealment; consequently, it is the best method to create visual stories that express the socio-cultural trends and conditions.

본 연구는 일반적인 패션의 표현 방식과 기능에서 벗어나 상황에 따라 역할과 형태가 변형되는 인플레이터블 웨어(inflatable wear)의 다양한 유형을 형태별 특성별로 분석함으로써 표현 특성과 내적인 의미에 대해서 알아보고자 하였다. 연구 결과, 인플레이터블 웨어의 첫 번째 유형은 신체와 패션의 실루엣에 대한 고정관념에 대한 도전으로, 단순히 디자인의 확장적 이미지를 표현한 형태로서 스커트나 재킷, 드레스의 일부분이 부풀어 확대되는 유형이다. 두 번째 유형은 미적 시각적 형태변환을 위한 퍼포먼스 컨셉의 유형으로서 리모트 컨트롤에 의한 시차적 형태변환이다. 과거에는 단순한 공기주입을 통한 형태의 확장에 그쳤다면 이 유형은 테크놀로지를 도입시켜 즉각적인 가변성을 강조한 퍼포먼스 형태로 제작되고 있다. 세 번째 유형은 다목적성, 다기능성 개념의 용도변환 형태이다. 형태의 변환을 통한 다용도의 개념이 기술을 통한 기능의 전환 디자인으로 표현된 것이다. 인플레이터블 웨어의 유형분석을 통해서 첫째, 기존 패션의 전통적 고정관념에서 벗어나 매우 확대된 개념의 디자인으로 소통과 확장된 교류 공간을 만들어 냄으로써 인체를 감싼 의복을 더 자유롭고 다양한 방식으로 표현하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 테크놀로지와 결합한 패션은 이동성과 가변성을 디자인에 적극 도입함으로써 패션에 대한 의미와 개념을 확대시켜 다목적 디자인으로서의 역할을 담당하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 셋째, 실험적 패션쇼 형태에서 나아가 공기주입 전과 공기주입 후의 과정을 시차적으로 보여주는 퍼포먼스의 장으로서 표현되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이를 통해 패션이 인간의 감성을 자극하고, 감정을 교류하는 장임은 물론 환경에 따른 인체의 보호와 은폐를 가능케 하는 다목적 디자인으로서 사회문화적 흐름과 상황을 표출하는 비주얼 스토리를 만들어 낼 수 있는 최고의 장임을 다시 한 번 알 수 있었다.
