Since Sino-U.S. relations functions as a structural determinant of state behavior in East Asia, it become an important factor when establishing South Korea's foreign policy and strategy. Furthermore, understanding the nature and pattern of Sino-U.S. relations is an essential precondition to South Korea, which is now facing a difficult task of solving North Korea's nuclear issues. In this context, this paper aims to review Sino-U.S. relations in recent years, forecast their future relations based on the theories of international relations, and finally discuss potential changes it may bring to East Asia and their implications to South Korea's foreign policy. In conclusion, this paper argues that the future Sino-U.S. relations will display the mixed strategy of engagement and hedging and that East Asia will be changed to bi-polar system where cooperation and conflict will intersect. This paper recommend that under this environment South Korea strengthens its mutual networks to both China and the U.S. in order to resolve North Korean nuclear issue and persuade them that it is in their ultimate interests.

미중관계는 본질적으로 동아시아 질서의 한계와 가능성을 결정할 수 있는 구조로서 역할을 하기 때문에 한국의 외교전략을 수립하는 데 있어서 중요한 고려 요인이 된다. 더욱이 북핵이라는 난제를 해결해야 하는 어려운 입장에 있는 한국으로서는 향후 미중관계의 본질과 변화 양상을 이해하는 것이 필수적인 선제조건이라고 할 수 있다. 이런 맥락에서 이 글에서는 향후 미중관계를 최근의 양국간의 행태에 대한 분석과 국제정치이론을 바탕으로 전망해보고 변화하는 미중관계가 가져올 동북아 질서의 변화, 특히 한반도에 시사하는 바를 논의하고 정책적 대안을 제시하고자 한다. 결론적으로 말하면, 이 글에서 주장하는 바는 향후의 미중관계는 양국이 모두 관여와 견제 정책을 선택적으로 추진하는 복합적 양상을 보일 것이며 장기적으로 동북아의 질서는 미중간에 협력과 견제가 교차하는 양극체제로 변모될 것으로 전망된다. 이런 조건 속에서 한국은 북핵문제를 해결하기 위하여 미중 양국에 대한 쌍방 네트워크를 강화하면서 한반도의 비핵화가 양국에도 궁극적인 이익을 가져온다는 점을 설득해 나가야 할 것이다.
