This paper studies what explains the production behavior of Japanese subsidiaries in China and how the production behavior affects the economic growth in Japan. This paper first reviews, using data from 1998 to 2006, FDI development of Japanese subsidiaries in China and then conducts correlation analysis and factor analysis with economic variables. The analysis shows that Japanese subsidiaries in China increased their local employments and local equipment investments in response to the economic shocks such as changes in interest rates and wages during the period of 1998～2006 in Japan and induced economic growth in Japan. The expansion of local equipment investments of Japanese subsidiaries in China hints that industrial structure in China is moving toward capital intensive phase.

본 연구는 해외직접투자를 통해 중국에 진출한 일본기업의 생산활동이 어떤 요인들에 의해 설명되며, 일본의 경제성장에는 어떻게 영향을 미쳤는지를 분석하였다. 1998-2006년 자료에 나타난 일본기업의 해외직접투자 현황과 특징을 살펴보고 주요 경제지표와의 상관분석 및 요인분석을 통해 이 기간의 경제환경 변화에 대처한 일본기업의 중국진출 전략을 연구하였다. 금리, 임금 변화 등 경제적 충격에 대해 중국에 진출한 일본기업은 현지고용 확대와 현지설비투자의 확대로 대응하였고 이러한 대응의 결과 일본의 수출과 공업생산도 증대된 것으로 분석되었다. 현지고용 및 현지설비투자의 확대는 중국진출 일본기업이 노동집약산업과 자본집약산업에 투자하였다는 사실을 의미하며, 이는 중국의 산업구조가 노동집약산업에서 자본집약산업으로 확대됨을 의미한다.
