The main argument of this paper is that a theoretical explanation based on the disciplines of International Relations and International Political Economy is needed to improve both academic and practical understandings toward Korea-China-Japan FTA. This paper argues that most of the earlier researches on Korea-China-Japan FTA have a strong tendency to focus on not only neo-liberal beliefs but also cost-benefit analysis. The primary purpose of this paper is to criticize this tendency of the earlier researches and to suggest alternative and supplementary explanations. This paper asserts that Korea-China- Japan FTA has to be a means or a process in developing a peaceful and integrative Northeast Asia Community.

본 연구는 한중일 FTA에 대한 국제정치경제학과 국제관계학의 이론적 접근을 시도한다. 중점적으로 이 연구는 국제정치경제학 이론을 통해 한중일 FTA에 대한 신자유주의적 접근의 문제점과 한계를 비판한다. 한중일 FTA에 대한 신자유주의적 접근은 한중일 FTA가 참여국가들이 나누어 먹을 피자를 키워준다는 일차방정식에 기반해 있지만, 이러한 단순 방정식으로는 한중일 FTA의 복잡다단한 정치경제적 측면을 이해하기 어렵다고 지적한다. 한중일 FTA를 둘러 싼 다차 방정식을 이해하기 위해 국가중심주의적이고 구조주의적인 시각 등 다양한 접근이 필요하다는 것이 이 글의 주장이다. 이 글은 또한 한중일 FTA에 대한 논의가 국가간 경제적 손익계산 중심으로 이루어지는 것은 곤란하다고 지적하고, 평화와 통합 지향적인 동북아공동체 건설이라는 중장기적인 목표를 달성하기 위한 하나의 수단이자 과정으로 활용해야 한다고 주장한다.
