In December 689, mere months before she established the Zhou dynasty and became China’s first and only female emperor, Wu Zhao promulgated twelve new characters, including one for her own name, Zhao. Over the next eight years, another half dozen new characters were created. Until she was ousted in 705 and the characters were discontinued, every time an official would petition the throne, every time a stone carver engraved a eulogy, every time a subject gazed upon the inscription of a monument, the ubiquitous new characters echoed her name. In crafting these characters, she struck a balance, straddling tradition and innovation, antiquity and the present. This essay looks at the political purpose, the meaning and the function of these new characters that became distinctive symbols of Wu Zhao’s reign.
