The Opium War in 1840 and the opening of Chinese ports marked the income of foreign capitalistic politics, economics and culture influence in China. Until the 1930s, the number of ports that had been opened to foreign countries reached around 110. Most of Chinese import and export trades were done in sea and river ports. The areas around the ports had the fastest development in China and became the foundations of modernization. The main trend of Chinese modernization began in sea ports and expanded to inland areas along transportation routes. The port-hinterland relation of modern China is based on this pattern of spatial development. This pattern caused transportation, industry and urban areas to aggregate in eastern costal areas. As its effect, new economic areas began to emerge; the development of areas around sea ports were faster than that of inland areas; and the development of areas along the hinterland-port transportation routes were faster than other areas. The importance of some traditional political centers that are far from ports and transportation routes began to fade. Until then, rather than the unbalance between north and south Chinaafter Tang dynasty, Chinese main economic gap had become the unbalance between west and east China.
