This study newly proposed the orientation of the work as studying the development and the function of the ingratitude-gratitude, the central narrative structure. In order to understand the main characters’ making relationship and the various conflict aspects, the ingratitude-gratitude structure was not only proper narrative frame but also the central structure of whole work. The conflict formation caused by ingratitude and the narration of the gratitude for problem solution repetitively unfolded with the main characters, Janghui and Jangu as the central figure, and the writer persistingly represented the critical view for the ingratitude-gratitude. The clues of the small and big conflicts in were the ingratitude of Hanje and Jangu. Their ingratitude provided the cause of conflict among related characters and sometimes one conflict provoked another conflict. In many types of the conflicts in the , the most serious conflict which couldn't be easy to make up by the end of the story was between Hanje and Janhui, and Jangu and Leeunhye. Hanje's son, Hanchangyeong and Jangwu's second mistress, Yangnanju made an effort to make up their relationships. Hanchangyeong was the character promoting harmony between two families through the marriage with Jandu's daughter, Jangnanhui for expiating his father's ‘ingratitude’. And Yangnanju was the character who contributed to let Jangu and Leeunhye make up through saving the Leeunhye’s life when Jangu and Leeunhye was not going well and moreover Leeunhye got into the crisis because of Jubuin's loss of virtue. Hanje and Jangu, the contributors of ingratitude, functioned as the main agents. We might guess the writer’s perspective for ingratitude behavior through what the reason of various conflict in the work was ‘ingratitude’ and what they tried to slow down and solve the conflict through ‘gratitude’. In addition, we discussed that must be regarded as the work focusing on the faith of human rather than the popular work focusing on the love between men and women through the writer’s critical perspective for ‘ingratitude’ and ‘gratitude’.

이 논문은 <창란호연록>의 중심 서사구조인 배은(背恩)-보은(報恩)의 전개 양상과 그 기능을 고찰함으로써 작품의 지향을 새롭게 조명해 본 것이다. 배은-보은의 구조는 주요 인물들의 결연과 다기한 갈등 양상을 이해하는 데 유효한 서사적 틀일 뿐 아니라 작품 전체를 관통하는 중심 구조이다. 배은으로 인한 갈등 형성과 문제 해결을 위한 보은의 서사는 중심인물인 장희와 장우를 축으로 반복적으로 전개되며, 작가는 ‘배은’과 ‘보은’에 대한 비평적 시각을 작품 전반에 걸쳐 지속적으로 드러내고 있다. <창란호연록>에서 크고 작은 갈등의 단초가 되는 것은 한제와 장우의 ‘배은’이다. 이들의 배은은 관련 인물들이 갈등하는 원인을 제공하였으며, 하나의 갈등은 또 다른 갈등을 유발하기도 하였다. 다양한 갈등 유형 중 <창란호연록>에서 갈등의 골이 가장 깊고, 작품이 끝날 때까지 관계 회복이 쉽지 않았던 인물은 한제와 장희, 그리고 장우와 이운혜였는데, 이들의 관계를 회복하기 위한 노력은 한제의 아들 한창영과 장우의 차실(次室) 양난주에 의해 이뤄진다. 한창영은 부친의 배은을 속죄하기 위해 장두의 딸 장난희와 혼인하여 두 가문의 화합을 도모하는 인물이며, 양난주는 장우와 이운혜가 화합하지 못하고, 급기야 주부인의 실덕으로 이운혜가 위기에 빠지자 이운혜의 목숨을 구하는 등 결과적으로 장우와 이운혜의 화합에 기여하는 인물이다. 한제와 장우가 배은하게 된 원인 제공자들이 결국 보은의 주체로 기능한 셈이다. 작품에서 벌어지는 다양한 갈등의 원인이 ‘배은’이며, ‘보은’을 통해 갈등을 완화하거나 해결하려 하였다는 점은 <창란호연록>의 작가가 ‘배은’ 행위에 대해 어떤 시각을 견지하고 있는지 짐작케 한다. 본고에서는 배은과 보은에 대한 작가의 비평적 시선을 통해 이 작품이 남녀 간의 애정에 초점을 맞춘 통속적 작품이라기보다는 인간의 신의를 부각시킨 작품으로 보아야 한다는 점을 논의하였다.
