The purpose of this study is to verify the necessity and efficiency of design research training that responds to sudden changes in the environment of the design industry and change in medium. The first outcome is that students who took the research-based class recognized the importance of quantitative research among qualitative·qualitative·user analysis researches in a statistically significant manner. Conventionally, design majors depend on qualitative image data, and lack interest in quantitative research, which occurs logically and sequentially. However, after taking the research-based class, they came to realize on their own that quantitative research can serve a crucial role in persuading clients, coming up with new ideas. The second outcome is that students who took the research-based class tend to have much stronger belief that 'ability to come up with a concept' and 'ability to do prior research on the project' are main factors that decide the quality of the design product. This proves that in the future design education, research-based design education is a necessity, as designers can no longer be defined as wrights that work with plastic skillsets. Through research-based design education, creative educational effect can be expected, where qualitative research is integrated with quantitative research that is often overlooked in the design education.

본 연구의 목적은 급변하는 디자인산업의 환경과 매체변화에 대응하는 디자인 리서치교육의 필요성과 효율성을 검증해 보는 것이다. 첫 번째 연구결과는 리서치기반 수업을 수강한 학생들이 정성적·정량적·사용자분석리서치 중 정량적리서치의 중요성에 대하여 통계적으로 유의하게 인지하고 있다는 것이다. 통상적으로 디자인 전공자들은 정성적 이미지자료에 의존하고 있으며, 논리적이고 순차적으로 진행되는 정량리서치에는 흥미를 가지고 있지 못하다. 그러나 리서치 기반의 수업을 듣고 나서는 정량적 리서치가 클라이언트를 설득하거나, 새로운 아이디어를 창출할 때, 중요한 역할을 한다는 것을 스스로 깨닫고 자신감을 가질 수 있게 되었다. 두 번째 연구결과는 리서치기반의 수업을 듣고 난 학생들이 디자인에서 ‘콘셉을 잡는 능력’과 ‘프로젝트에 관한 사전 리서치 능력’이 결국 디자인 결과물의 수준을 결정하는 주요 요인이라는 생각이 훨씬 강하다는 것이다. 이는 조형적 스킬을 다루는 기능인으로 디자이너를 더 이상 정의할 수 없는 앞으로의 디자인 교육에서 리서치 기반의 디자인 교육이 꼭 필요한 항목이라는 것을 증명해준다. 리서치기반 디자인교육을 통해 일반적인 디자인 교육에서 간과하기 쉬운 정량적리서치와 정성적리서치가 통합되는 창의적인 교육의 효과를 기대해 볼 수 있었다.
