Rob Gonsalves influenced by Surrealism, shows the 'magic realism' characteristics are represented by the space contradictory and illogical. His pictures are creating a surreal yet fantastic space as the representation of the real world of ordinary space. He shows the two spaces together in a realistic way. This paper analysis the expression revealed in Gonsalves's contradictory pictures as a research question whether space has an ambiguous image due to an optical illusion and how the artist made the configuration of the ambiguous figure on screen space planning. To this end, 'inverted figure' and 'forms of metamorphosis and combination' as the keyword were quantified by classifying his 84 pictures. As a result, the image in inverted optical illusion is created by 50% 'ambiguity means', and morphologically is turned into an image by 74% 'juxtaposition'. In other words, juxtaposition means the two realistic spaces shown through a realistic perspective. It was described using an ambiguity image, which expresses the reverse sense by making the surrealistic space of illusion. 초현실주의에 영향을 받아 ‘마술적 사실주의’ 특성을 보여주는 롭 곤잘베스(Rob Gonsalves)는 공간을 모순적, 비논리적으로 표현하고 있다. 이로 인해 대체로 그의 작품은 초현실적 측면에서만 분석되어져 왔다. 본 논문은 롭 곤잘베스의 작품에 드러나는 공간의 모순적 표현이 이중 이미지를 갖고 있는가를 연구 문제로 삼아 기존의 초현실주의적 분석과 함께 착시에 의한 분석을 하였다. 이에 더해 작가가 공간의 이중적 표현을 위해 화면을 어떻게 구성하고 계획하였는지에 대해 분석하였다. 분석은 ‘반전 착시’와 ‘형태의 변형과 결합’을 키워드로 그의 84개 작품을 분류하여 수치화하였다. 이를 통해 ‘착시 반전’은 ‘의미 반전’이 50%, ‘형태의 변형과 결합’은 74%가 ‘결합’에 의한 이미지로 드러났다. 즉, 원근법을 이용한 사실적 묘사를 통해 두 개의 현실 공간을 ‘결합’시켜 초현실적 공간을 만듦으로 의미가 ‘반전’하는 착시의 이중 이미지를 표현하고 있었다. 즉, 곤잘베스의 작품은 초현실주의가 사용했던 오브제끼리의 결합이 아닌 두 개의 사실 공간 간의 결합을 통해 비현실적 마술 공간을 만들었고, 이중 이미지 착시 표현이 갖는 특성인 모호성, 다의성, 유희성, 연상성, 순환성 등의 특징을 보였다. 이러한 특성은 보는 이로 하여금 기존의 공간 표현과 다른 차이를 찾으려는 적극적 태도를 취하게 하여 작품에 대한 몰입도를 높이고 메시지 수용에 있어 흥미를 끄는 전달 수단이 되고 있었다.
