The aim of this study is to analyze several philosophical approaches which provide logical structures of philosophical inquiry in dance research, in order to help dance researchers and students understand philosophical perspectives related to dance inquiry and properly use philosophical inquiry as a dance research methodology. Considering dance activities and phenomena as aesthetic activities, the approach based on logical positivism may delimit dance meanings in dance objects. Then, the current realist approach may be a principal method to philosophical inquiry in dance research, for it retains logical structures and principles operated in scientific inquiry, accepts the multiplicity of meanings in dance activities, and allows the dance researchers to choose dance research methods responding to dance objects. Because dance research is usually done in the realm where the principle of empirical verification can’t be applied or is inappropriate, phenomenological and hermeneutic approaches may be also used as useful methods to philosophical inquiry in dance research. However, whatever dance reach methods are chosen, dance researchers should understand that dance research methods direct the direction and nature of dance research, and restrict meanings in dance objects. Then, to have dance objects express their meanings without any limit, it is necessary for dance researchers to be focused on dance questions in dance objects by using more flexible and elastic methods to philosophical inquiry in dance research.

본 연구는 무용 연구의 철학적 탐구에 기반이 되는 주요 철학적 접근을 논의함으로써 무용 연구자들이 철학적 탐구와 관련된 철학적 관점을 이해하고 무용 연구 방법론으로서 철학적 탐구의 적절한 활용에 기여하는 데 연구 목적을 두고 있다. 무용 공연 및 현상은 인간의 미적 행위라는 점에서 경험적 관찰에 의한 검증 가능성 원칙, 그리고 설명과 예측 간의 대칭성을 주장하는 논리실증주의적 접근법에 근거한 철학적 탐구는 연구 대상이 갖는 의미를 제한하는 효과를 가진다. 이러한 점에서 볼 때 과학적 탐구에서 활용되는 논리적 구조 및 원리를 철학적 탐구에서도 유지하면서 연구 대상인 인간 행위가 갖는 의미의 다원성을 수용하고 그에 따라 연구자가 연구 대상이 갖는 의미에 적합한 방법론을 선택할 수 있도록 하는 현대 실재론적 접근법이 무용 연구에 있어서 주된 철학적 탐구 방법론이라고 할 수 있다. 또한 무용 연구에서는 지각에 근거한 실증적 관찰에서 벗어나 실증적 검증의 원칙이 적용될 수 없거나 적합하지 않은 상상적 개념에 근거한 연구가 주로 이루어지며, 이에 따라 연구자는 보다 더 연구 대상에 반응하는 방식이 활용될 필요가 있다는 점에서 현상학 및 해석학적 접근법이 또 다른 유용한 철학적 탐구 방법론으로 활용될 수 있다. 어떤 무용 연구 방법론을 사용하더라도 연구 방법론 그 자체는 연구 대상으로부터 제기될 수 있는 질문의 성격과 방향을 설정하면서 연구 대상으로부터 알 수 있는 것을 제한한다. 따라서 무용 연구는 연구 대상이 되는 무용 공연 및 현상이 제기하는 문제들에 초점을 두어야 하며, 그렇게 할 수 있도록 무용 연구의 철학적 탐구 방법론이 보다 유연하면서도 탄력성을 가질 필요가 있다.
