Tale of the Hollow Tree(うつほ物語) is Japanese classical literature wase written in the 10th century. The hero, Toshikage, was sent as an envoy to Tang China, but a monsoon kept him from arriving at Tang China, and finally he was set adrift to Persia (波斯国). He passed down traditional Japanese Instruments, KING, brought from Persia to his descendants, who enjoyed prosperous lives with it. At this regard, Persia in the Tale of the Hollow Tree is very significant. However so far it is not clear how Persia in the Tale of the Hollow Tree was described because there are few records about Persia in Japanese literature. Meanwhile, Persia is described in the Hye-cho Diary (往五天竺國傳), which was written by Hye-cho. He was a monk in the Silla era. He wrote it, while travelling in ancient India. Moreover, it can be observed that the descriptions about Persia in the Hye-cho Diary are very similar to those of the Tale of the Hollow Tree. In this study, I compare the expressions in the Tale of the Hollow Tree and the Hye-cho Diary and explore the possibility of the influencing relationship.

『우쓰호 이야기』는 10세기 중반에 써진 일본의 고전문학작품이다. 주인공인 도시카게는 사신으로 발탁되어 당나라로 파견되는데, 결국 폭풍을 만나 당나라에는 도착하지 못하고 파사국(波斯國)에 표류하고 만다. 그리고 파사국에서 가지고 온 칠현금을 자손들에게 전승하는데, 이를 매개로 하여 그의 자손들은 영화로운 삶을 누리게 된다. 이렇게 보면 『우쓰호 이야기』에서 파사국이 가지는 의미는 매우 크다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 파사국에 대한 기록이 일본의 문헌에 많이 남아 있지 않기 때문에, 『우쓰호 이야기』에서 파사국이 어떠한 이미지로 그려졌는지 지금까지 명확히 밝혀진 바가 없다. 한편 신라의 승려 혜초가 고대 인도를 여행하며 남긴 기행문 즉 『왕오천축국전』에는 파사국이 등장하는데, 파사국에 대한 묘사가 『우쓰호 이야기』와 유사한 점이 있다. 본고에서는 『우쓰호 모노가타리』와 『왕오천축국전』의 표현을 비교검토하고, 그 영향관계의 가능성을 분석한다.
