This study analyzes the transnational practices of ethnic Koreans in southern Russia, and the effects of these practices on ethnic identity. Based upon field research in the Rostov region of Russia, this study identifies six typical transnational practices of Soviet Koreans: cross-national economic activities, immigrant organizations, seasonal migrant tenant farming, ethnic encounters in business, immigrant newspapers, and homeland support for cultural activities. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of transnational ties in reviving ethnic identity in members of the Korean diaspora. Through transnational practices, Korean ethnic identities long hidden at a subconscious level can be brought to the fore. This research additionally suggests the need for further study of various Korean diaspora groups overseas to confirm the reliability of the research conclusion.

본 연구에서는 남부 러시아 고려인의 초국가적 경험을 분석하고 또한 이러한 초국가적 관행이 민족정체성에 미치는 영향을 검토하는 것이 목적이다. 러시아 남부 로스토프지역의 현지조사를 기초로 한 본 연구는 소비에트 고려인의 다음과 같은 6가지 전형적인 초국가적 관행을 분석한다: 초국가적 경제활동, 고려인 이민조직, 고본질로 알려진 계절이주 임차영농, 상업활동에서의 동족간의 접촉, 이민자 신문, 문화적 활동에 대한 고국의 지원 등. 본 연구의 결과에 따르면 상기 6가지의 초국가적 관행이 독립국가연합 고려인의 민족정체성에 중요한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타나고 있다. 다시 말해서 이러한 초국가적 관행을 통하여 잠재적으로 오랜 기간 내면화 되었던 고려인들의 민족정체성이 표면에 등장하는 계기가 되는 셈이다. 마지막으로 본 연구는 해당 연구결과의 신뢰성을 확인하기 위해서 다양한 재외한인 디아스포라에 대한 추가 연구가 필요함을 시사하고 있다.
